Locals get up in arms over Charter's digital push, ignore that 2009 is almost here {Engadget HD}
Aug 3rd 2008 8:43PM Cable systems are not bound to the February 09 cutoff date for analog programming, but many *will* be switching off analog programming in the next year or two to save bandwidth for more HD channels. This will most likely require a converter box, which will most likely be provided by the cable company. This may vary from system to system, but one would hope there will be some new regulation similar to the old cable-ready regulations, where the QAM tuner in most digital TVs could be used instead of a box for channels beyond the locals.
Nintendo launches TV Guide Channel in Japan, enables Wiimote to control TV {Engadget HD}
Mar 4th 2008 1:47PM The "sensor" bar is an IR emitter. It supposedly sends IR signals to the TV, although I would imagine it would have to be oriented in the other direction (or you'd need a mirror on your couch!)
Ask TUAW: Ripped DVDs in Front Row, Sleeping MacBook, game controllers, and more {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Oct 22nd 2007 10:16AM Front Row in Leopard will apparently play VIDEO_TS folders natively so DVD Assist will no longer be needed. And as mentioned earlier, transcoding with Handbrake is not a solution to the OP's question as it reduces quality (as does any lossy encoding) and you lose the DVD menus and extras.

Mac 101: Reset your Mac OS X password {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jul 17th 2007 7:27PM Unless there's an open firmware password, if you have physical access to a machine, you can get into it (and even open firmware passwords aren't unbreakable).
This is no secret! Why do you think datacenters have keycard locks?
This is a helpful hint, NOT a security vulnerability.
Invisible Shield now available for the iPhone {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jul 6th 2007 4:26PM Invisible shield is a nice product - it's actually just custom-cut 3M Scotchgard paint protection film that is sold to protect the hood, bumper, and doors of cars. I have it on my phone and my iPod nano. There are small areas of my phone it doesn't cover, and they have been worn to bare metal, but the covered areas are like new. The iPod which is covered completely is spotless.
But hasn't the iPhone's screen been shown to be essentially scratchproof? Is this really necessary, for the screen anyway? The tests did show the outer metal ring getting banged up, so protection for the non-screen areas would probably be a good idea.
Besides, the invisible shields tend to have much more friction to your finger than the bare product itself, so I would think this would make gesturing more difficult. I am curious to see how this would end up feeling.
