Jul 11th 2007 11:22AM #14 - Having experienced both sides of the waiting room argument (American living in Canada) I can say that you are way off base here. There are short falls to Canadian healthcare, but there are far more grevious shortcomings in the US.
Waiting times: You obviously haven't been to a see a DR any time in the recent past. My wife and I (expecting our first) have routinely waited up to 2 hours to get in to our scheduled appointments in the US during the first 5 months of her pregnancy. Absolutely ridiculous - and it's not just our DR, as we've heard complaints from friends all across the US. The beauty, is that we're having our baby in Canada (wife is Canadian) and we get in within 5 minutes of our scheduled appointment. Our appointments here have been just as professional, without the 1.5 - 2 hour wait from our scheduled appointments.
Cost: Being self employed, and unable (ironically) to find a health provider in the US (Nevada) that would give us maternity coverage because my wife and I co-own our company (wtf?), we are paying out of pocket. In the states, for delivery only, this would cost us NO LESS than $5k assuming we were in the hospital for one day and there were absolutely NO complications and we brought in all of our own supplies (own diapers, clothes, sheets, wipes, food, etc) and received no pain medication or pain management assistance.
By comparison, assuming the same "perfect delivery" scenario, our baby will cost $1600 CDN and we have already received a flat fee quote from the hospital. If we were dishonest, and had lied about my wife's permanent residence in the US, it would have been $700 - for an uninsured Canadian citizen living in Canada.
I'm sorry, but in my experience, health care in the US could easily break the bank and put a well employed person in ruin. Our individual health care costs (BCBS Anthem) run about $500 a month without maternity coverage and have pretty steep deductibles. We'll save piles of money having our baby in Canada, with no waits, and a staff of Dr and Nurses happy to help us out.
Just my experience - but at least I can speak from both sides.

Jan 17th 2007 11:59AM Panasonic makes computers? Where have I been? I'd expect something useless like this from their red-headed stepchild JVC, but not from them. They must conceal them well at CES and NAB - I've never seen them on display.
