Joyswag: Win Grand Theft Auto IV on your platform of choice {Joystiq}

My $60 left me for Mario Kart Wii and that homewrecking bastard left a steering wheel on my coffee table as a memento of the sordid affair.

Keighley takes on Fox News' seXbox seXposé {Joystiq}

Jan 22nd 2008 12:29AM Much praise to Geoff for having the character to go on there and at least try to speak the truth despite the fact they never intended to give him or the game a fair shake.

The only thing that scares me more than the ignorant "reporters" and pundits on Fox News is the thought that some people actually think there's real news on that channel.

Lying and having the nerve to call those lies news should be illegal. It's a disservice to the public. I feel like my IQ dropped two points from just watching that drivel.

And don't get me started on that panel...

The countdown to CES begins! {Engadget HD}

Jan 4th 2008 12:52PM Nfinity and Truth Teller,

I support HD DVD and I agree with some of the ideas you all put forward about innovations in the works this year for HD DVD, but the absolute venom you post with doesn't help the cause. It just makes you appear angry and makes it possible for people to write you off.

There's a more civil way to debate, and if you can't debate civilly, there's no point for you to debate because you've already lost.

Here is an example of how to get your point across:

"HD DVD gave a strong performance during 2007. While unable to break weekly sales ratio domination by Blu-ray, sales of HD DVD hardware grew and several HD DVD titles sold well over time regularly making the top ten HD sellers list.

Blu-ray dominance during 2007 in software sales ratios appears to be due to continued support from PS3 owners. With over 2 million PS3 owners a large number of Blu-ray releases and BOGO sales targeted specifically for the PS3 demographic, Blu-ray has exhibited an ability to outsell HD DVD software with around a 1.6:1 ratio. It remains to be seen however whether Blu-ray support can grow substantially outside the PS3 install base to avoid the same fate the UMD movie format was dealt on the PSP.

The PS3 effect is strong, but with HD DVD players largely available at sub $200-$250 prices, Warner appearing ready to reaffirm their continuing support for the format at CES and Twin Discs and TL51 on the horizon, the question of whether its support goes beyond a single demographic will be put to test."

The above points out the fact that HD DVD has performed strongly during 2007 despite the sales ratios, and still acknowledges the reality that Blu-ray did sell well while asking the obvious question of what it all means.

When you make reasonable points, people are more likely to see your point of view. It's painfully obvious that there are Blu-ray supporters who will do ANYTHING to skew the news, numbers and customers their way, but you don't win the heart and mind of J6P by attacking them with the same methods.

Just my .02. All's fair in love and war as it goes, so continue to fight the good fight, but please do it responsibly.

Analysts: Blu-ray might, maybe, could win in 2008 {Engadget HD}

Dec 22nd 2007 6:45PM Nate,

Both formats will do just fine if both survive. The idea that one must win is one of propaganda. As consumers we should not subscribe to it. We benefit from competition. If only one survives, competition does not exist.

HD DVD and Blu-ray will go the route of DVD +/-

Toshiba HD-A30 review {Engadget HD}

Dec 19th 2007 4:43PM Tim,

I've particpated in that thread over at AVS, and there are quite a few members who report absolutely no difference in upconversion playback at 1080i or 1080p.

In fact, I watch all SD DVDs at 1080p and have not seen an playback issue yet.

Most who point to this issue have only picked it up on calibration test disc.

Dec 19th 2007 4:34PM Thanks for replying. I'll check out Transformers disc 2 again when I get home tonight, I hadn't seen problems before. Were there any other discs you noticed the same problem on?

The reason I suggest HDMI handshaking is because I have seen significant judder when switching away and back to the HDMI input for my A30 while it's in playback.

Toshiba HD-A30 review {Engadget HD}

Dec 19th 2007 3:58PM Ben,

Nice review! I did have a couple points to add though.

1) You can configure the player by simply stopping the playback and selecting SETUP on the remote. You don't actually have to eject the disc. I do this all the time on my A30 when switching between DVDs (which I watch in 1080p) and HD DVDs (which I watch in 1080p24)

2) The 1080p24 on the A30 is passthrough. There is no forced 24p feature on any of the third gen Toshiba HD DVD players to my knowledge, so with the player on 1080p24 it is playing the native frame rate on the disc. Stuttering on HD DVD playback at 1080p24 is definetely not typical for the player. This could be an HDMI handshaking issue.

BTW, the set my A30 is connected to is the Toshiba Regza 47HL167 if that helps.

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending November 18th, 2007 {Engadget HD}

Nov 27th 2007 1:02PM 1.94:1

Is that really something to celebrate? Blu-ray fans and the BDA have called the war over and publicly listed HD DVD as dead several times this year and yet HD DVD lives and continues to sell. That's victory enough for me.

BOGO salesdo skew the numbers. People will always buy when there's a sale, it's different when you're at regular retail pricing. As long as we see BOGO after BOGO we'll never know how the two will sell going head to head.

Hardware sales are more vital to the outcome of this war anyway. The A35 was the most popular HD item on Amazon in last weeks special sale, that speaks volumes about HD DVD's market recognition. With prices on HD DVD players likely to continue to trend lower, they will continue to sell more standalones than Blu-ray.

As the PS3 serves only a small demographic of the overall home video market, it will not decide the war.

It should be pretty clear to everyone now that if Blu-ray doesn't lose, both formats will likely co-exist. HD DVD has survived the worst of it and doesn't look to be going anywhere.

Star Trek: The Original Series Season 1 HD DVD review roundup {Engadget HD}

Nov 20th 2007 10:12PM MI,

You're trying to defend a man who says the exact same thing on EVERY HD DVD review; "It could have been better if it had more capacity...higher bitrate". I'm not leading a campaign against the man, but let's not pretend he's being objective in his reviews.

From the sum of all the reviews thus far, this release is of high quality. As my wife is a TOS fan (knows episodes by the first 30 seconds)and this includes both SD and HD, this is a likely Christmas gift.

I hope season 2 has the same quality.
