New York Bar Association to would-be lawyers: No Macs Allowed {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jul 31st 2008 10:46AM This really isn't such a big deal. For one thing, it's a statewide exam that is administered with a huge amount of lawyers involved. That means that things like liability are big concerns, and they have every right to have a controlled situation - this means that the IT staff doesn't need to know how to work with macs (most only know PCs).

Second, most people in the legal arena need to use PCs because they use Wordperfect. There's no Mac version.

Third, and I say this as a NYS employee who deals with a lot of lawyers (and I can't stress that enough), NY government does not hate Macs. I use two Mac Pros and a MacBook Pro, all supplied by the state, and the results my team gets are very satisfactory. This story is just about an exam given by and for people who are pros at finding loopholes, so they need very controlled environments.

Hitachi's new DZ-BD10H camcorder pairs Blu-ray with a 30GB HDD {Engadget}

Jul 24th 2008 10:52AM I'm looking at one right now. It's a Panasonic AG-HVX200A with a FS-100 HD. Total cost of around $7400.

It's actually not 1080p with 60fps, but it has a nice 24fps mode, and the 720p can do 60fps. But this is well above consumer level.

Creative announces Zen Mosaic, looks like bad Mondrian {Engadget}

Jul 24th 2008 9:45AM I'm only a former creative fan (back when I used PCI sound cards, in the way back when) but I think that at least this device looks nice. The varying shades work nicely and should provide some subtle context clues so that you can use it with a little less effort. Of course this all depends on the software, but there's promise.

However, I doubt it will sell well when the same $200 would get you 8GB storage and a whole lot more from Apple. Maybe it will sell well to those who just hate Apple.

Sony's CFO says no PlayStation 3 price cut is planned {Engadget}

Jul 11th 2008 10:04AM Closest thing to a confirmed price cut we're going to get from Sony.

I'm holding off on my purchase until this thing gets a little cheaper. I know, it's still the cheapest way to get a blu-ray player, but I am not interested in it for the blu-ray. Maybe they painted themselves into a corner by including such a new technology, but I'm not going to go ahead and share in the drawbacks of that decision until I want to share in the benefits - and my guess is that they'll decrease the drawbacks (with a price cut) before my desire to share the benefits increases. If this Xbox price cut doesn't do it, then I guess I'll wait until January and see what happens.

iPhone 3G review {Engadget}

Jul 11th 2008 9:48AM Every tech site is doing heavy iPhone coverage today. Do you know why? Because it's the news that users want to read. Every site wants to get as many views as possible, and the best way to do this is by posting articles that are of interest, and posting them fast.

That's right, Engadget isn't just a bunch of hippies who act independently of any financial interests. Servers cost money, employees cost money, and Engadget needs a way to make money to keep everything going. So they're not going to pander to the people who DON'T want to read news articles about a certain topic on a day that there are a lot of stories about that topic - especially a topic which interests a lot of people on the site. Even the people who don't want to read those articles click through and leave comments about it. Engadget would be foolish to decide they weren't going to post Apple articles so that you don't have to read them.

It's iPhone 3G tear-down time {Engadget}

Jul 10th 2008 11:23AM You know, you can't spell "PS3guy" without "3g".

I've got two words for you: You're a stupid ass.

AppleScript: Taking screenshots {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jul 7th 2008 11:09AM I was thinking the same thing. This post is even worse than the previous one - while that one would result in you having png files as screenshots (keeping things as they were by default), this applescript will create a jpeg image file with a png extension!

Tesla's Elon Musk promises sub-$30k all-electric car in less than four years {Engadget}

Jun 30th 2008 3:45PM The bottom is chopped off and it looks like somebody took a bite out of it. Also, the colors are all wrong.

Tesla's Elon Musk promises sub-$30k all-electric car in less than four years {Engadget}

Jun 30th 2008 3:42PM Well, I know I asked for a $5 blowjob machine. Did they not read all the comments? What gives, Tesla?

Tesla announces the Model S: a $60k, all-electric, five passenger sports sedan {Engadget}

Jun 30th 2008 2:55PM Technophile, "liters" is not french for "gallons." :)

$1.35/L is about $5.11/gallon.
