As for your wondering of why the studios don't just put the latest firmware updates on their discs, my guess is this:
I think that the studios wouldn't want to have any chance of being blamed for any players that could be hurt at all by a failed firmware update.

Sunday, December 23, we'll see "Rush Hour 3" coming to Blu-ray and "The Kingdom" and "Eastern Promises" coming to HD DVD. Certainly those movies will count? I know I'll be getting both of those HD DVDs. :)
