Xbox 360 outsells the original Xbox, Microsoft heads down to the trophy shop {Engadget}

Nov 26th 2008 8:53AM FTFA:"Microsoft has just announced that sales of the Xbox 360 have outraced total sales of the original Xbox, a mere two days after the 360's third birthday on November 22." and then "To put this in perspective, a total of 25 million original Xboxes were sold during its lifecycle of November 2001 - May, 2005 (roughly three and a half years)."

that means
3 and a half years for the xbox to reach 25 million
3 years for the 360 to reach 25 million.

I don't understand the celebration. This is like them winning back their original base. Not only that
(halo 2 sold 8 million to an install base of 24 million)
(halo 3 sold 8 million to an install base of 17 million)

You woulda have thought that this would have happened sooner.

Chinese pirates offering cheap AVCHD Blu-ray rips on disguised DVD-Rs {Engadget}

Nov 17th 2008 9:34AM What? Dude, your NOT SUPPOSED to sit close to such a large HDTV. Thats probably why you can't tell the difference. I have a 55 inch Samsung DLP. I sit 14 or more feet away. I can easily tell the difference between 720 and 1080.

New Xbox Experience load times compared: DVD versus HDD {Engadget}

Nov 1st 2008 10:41PM Vanillacide, while you are right about the 2006 delay you are wrong about the blu ray. Even the earliest released specs had Blu ray apart of the console, they never planned to ship with regular dvd.

"Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3 will use Blu-ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also support CR-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats."

"TOKYO--According to Kyodo News, Sony officials announced today that they will use Blu-ray Disc technology in their next-generation console, most commonly referred to as the PlayStation 3."

PlayStation 3 to use Blu-ray Disc

PSP-3000 put under microscope, interlacing issue exposed {Engadget}

Oct 31st 2008 12:59PM They never called it a feature. They said it was an issue created because of a feature.

"By improving LCD response time to reduce ghosting, the horizontal-line phenomenon becomes more visible." Turns out, phenomenon means "no fix in sight." According to Sony, "Since this phenomenon is caused by hardware characteristics, there is no plan to fix it with system software update."

I guess they have to make headlines somehow.

HD Netflix streaming comes to Xbox 360 first {Engadget}

Oct 29th 2008 9:52AM Sony makes money of off Blu ray and they are in charge of licensing. I am sure BR is an extra source of income. But you are right about sony pictures trying to sidestep Disc based media.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/17/sony-details-ps3-firmware-2-50-upgrades-divx-vod-support-av-tw/

http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/09/sony-pictures-televisions-serving-up-content-to-divx-certified/

As evidenced here they are going to try to use the PS3 to push on multiple fronts giving consumers even more options. So the PS3 is going to be able to stream HD Divx, already can stream flash media (stutters on some HD), Upscales DVD's, Plays blu rays, display content streamed from any DNLA certified program or device (which ironically brings netflix streaming to the PS3 as well), Has a video store where you can purchase or rent movies and TV shows, and on top of that can play media stored off of external hard drives and other memory sources.

People trying to paint Sony as dependent on Blu ray only are just sounding childish in the face of the flexibility and freedom that sony has allowed PS3 users to watch both standard and high def content on their PS3.

HD Netflix streaming comes to Xbox 360 first {Engadget}

Oct 29th 2008 9:30AM I doubt Sony is worrying about this. The last update brought to the PS3 allowed for you to register the device as a Divx certified player.

*ahem*
http://www.divx.com/connected/

Added to their digital video store on the PSN. I really doubt Sony is worried about Digital media taking over for Disc based media. There is alot of other reason why people will never give up tangible media (and I do Download alot) and that is mainly because of ownership, rights and trust with certain companies. It also has to do with the average speed of internet 'Worldwide' and the overall willingness of the average consumer to go completely digital.

Besides, all this talk about "nails in coffin" only makes you sound like a disgruntled HD-DVD supporter.

Sony "looking into" PSP-3000 screen interlacing problems {Engadget}

Oct 22nd 2008 7:15PM The ever so respectable journalistic engadget and joystiq combo.

""On some occasions, scan lines may appear on scenes where brightness changes drastically, due to the hardware features of the new LCD device on PSP-3000. Installed with this new LCD device, PSP-3000 offers more natural and vibrant colors on its screen, but the scan lines have come out to be more visible as a result of improving response time to alleviate the afterimages on PSP-3000. Since this is due to hardware specification, there are no plans for a system software update concerning this issue."

Doesn't say that the scanlines were a feature, they say they were caused by another feature.

And personally the situation is overblown. Even in the briliant shot of laharl there you would have to move him side to side extremely fast to get that effect. It is generally not noticable in many of the games I have played except for gurumin.

PSP-3000 ripped to shreds for your enjoyment {Engadget}

Oct 16th 2008 10:58AM The screen was the only reason why I upgraded and especially after holding them up side by side, it was well worth it. The improved color and brightness actually changes the experience.

http://www.gameargus.com/2008/10/15/psp-3000-having-screen-issues/

I noticed screen tearing on killzone liberation but I thought it was always there. I haven't noticed any other issues with the other titles I have played. In most cases it makes the experience better.

Sony bigwig balks at "five year" Blu-ray demise prediction {Engadget}

Sep 25th 2008 9:17PM "If the companies making blu-ray players can't get one out for less than $400, I'm tempted to agree with you. So they won the format war and yet all the price drops that should be happening aren't."

Hmm? you mean like the Insignia BDP thats $229 or the sharp aquos that is $299. I mean you can walk into best buy and see these on the shelf.

What is really happening is doom and gloom. At first all the internet forums were abuzz during the HD war about how HD DVD was going to winn because of name recognition and the fact that they sold more "stand alone players". In the face of that logic Blu ray outsold HD DVD for pretty much over a year worldwide and studios obviously went with the tangible results.... their movie sales. I was one of the few people who called it when Warner decided to taunt their special harry potter features for HD DVD and the movie still sold more on BR. It was a test. We know who the winner is and the sour grapes talk turned to Upscale only chants. As soon as that talk died down the relatively small group that was talking about the silly notion of Digital Downloads as our future got louder.

As if the DRM is going to be better. As if most people have hi speed internet. As if most internet providers do not have caps. As if the majority of the average joe's out there (you know the ones to stupid to realize that HD-DVD was supposed to be the successor to DVD because of its name) have the technical know how to feel conferable to the downloads. As if the majority of consumers would really feel more comfortable about owning movies on a hard drive instead of another form of media.

I barely trust these companies with their disc based media and here your telling me that the future involves a medium which allows them greater control to act like a bunch of idiots.

You seriously have to be kidding.

Sony's PlayStation Home gets seriously previewed {Engadget}

Sep 18th 2008 10:40AM It looks like my last response didn't go through.

As I tried to post earlier you as a person/avatar are the lobby. An icon above your head signifies to people if you had started a lobby. people can then select the avatar to see what game and decide if they want to join or not. Meanwhile this doesn't hamper your ability to play other games in home (even MP ones).
