Blu-ray releases on October 7th 2008 {Engadget HD}

Oct 6th 2008 2:28PM Man that is sad!!! If I want to buy electronics/movies, I go buy it. Why do you guys have to ask permission? Don't you guys earn money!

Glad my life is not like that. Also, my kid does not have her own TV.

HD DVD and Blu-ray only account for 1% of Netflix's shipments {Engadget HD}

Mar 28th 2007 11:37AM I don't know if Blockbuster rents HD-DVD or not but they do rent Bluray. I have a PS3. However, Blockbuster's method is brain-dead, while Netflix's is logical. In blockbuster your queue does not have a media-type column (attribute). Instead, they just go by the name of the movie such as Casino Royale Bluray or something like that. So, it is easy of a renter to make the mistake of just choosing the DVD rather than the Bluray. In, netflix, you can go once to your account properties and say what kind of HD player you have and then also say that you want that kind of disk everytime you put a movie in the queue. It will automatically choose the Bluray version for you if you do prefer. Also, this info is displayed in the queue in a column and it allows the renter to change the media type for a single movie in the queue. Very cool.

Blu-ray players get a new standard set of features this October {Engadget HD}

Mar 25th 2007 2:18PM I only value good 1080p encodes and lossless music formats. So, as long as Bluray and PS3 can deliver on those, I don't give a hoot about fancy menus and PIP, BD-Java, etc. I buy or rent movies for watching, not for playing around with the menus.

Cringely thinks the Apple TV will hurt Blu-ray and HD DVD sales {Engadget HD}

Mar 23rd 2007 12:27PM Your comparison is really messed up!!

While I am not that excited about AppleTV, the comparisons don't include network downloadable content. While the quality may not be there, downloadable content is not possible on HD-DVD players. May be you should limit your comparisons to XBox360 and such and AppleTV.

U-verse rolling into Kansas City {Engadget HD}

Mar 21st 2007 10:54AM There are still lots of bugs and you can only stream one HD station at a time. That sucks since I currently DVR both 24 and Heroes through my dual tuner OTA HD setup. Plus, I don't pay anything for my OTA setup. The only thing that excites me is the possibility of naked DSL. Then I can ditch my landline. But price might be ridiculous

Getting ready for Apple TV {Engadget HD}

Mar 13th 2007 3:02PM Apple TV does not need Quicktime per se. Its video support are all well advertised codecs. H.264, and MPEG4. You can create these files using any software on PC or Mac.

The reason why Time Warner's HD lineup isn't that great {Engadget HD}

Mar 12th 2007 2:31PM I am exclusive to OTA and don't regret one bit. I have Netflix ($10) and Blockbuster ($10) plan and a PS3 and a 1080P HDTV and a Sony HD-DVR. No need to pay per month for TV programming. My total entertainment budget per month is $20. I get standard DVDs, PS3 game (one a month) and Bluray DVDs with this setup. I also get all network shows in HD.

HDTV Listings for March 9, 2007 {Engadget HD}

Mar 12th 2007 11:51AM Did you actually try using the HDMI input. My TV says that too but it works fine. They are just wanting to avoid the support issues. It will work fine!

Public Citizen sue to postpone analog shutoff {Engadget HD}

Feb 17th 2007 1:36PM The analog shutoff does not affect cable. Only OTA. I am not sure I understand the overcompressed signal argument. I get all my HD through OTA and they are not overcompressed. If you are getting your analog channels through cable, you will not have to do anything. You can continue to get it through analog cable. Most OTA channels are not overcompressed.

HD DVD and Blu-ray releases on February 13th, 2007 {Engadget HD}

Feb 13th 2007 12:05PM PS3 upconversion is really a non-issue for people that connect to their TV using HDMI and if the TV has a quality scaler built-in. Since the signal stays in digital domain, the TV can do the upconversion. The PS3 does have a top notch deinterlacer that does the 3:2 pulldown and outputs a 480p signal through HDMI. I have watched several SD-DVDs on PS3 and its quality rivals the upconvert players. I have a 61" JVC Pro HD-ILA. I would rather trust a scaler in a $4000 TV rather than a $500 Player.
