Netflix API open to all: let the developing begin {Engadget HD}
Oct 1st 2008 12:55PM i think the answer to my own question is no. I am downgrading this from a "WOOT!!" to a "meh"
"The Netflix Web APIs provide the ability for you to integrate Netflix user services into your application. The APIs provide the following capabilities:
* Performing searches of movies, TV series, cast members, and directors
* Retrieving catalog titles, including details about the title such as name, box art, director, cast, etc.
* Determining the subscriber's relationship to a specific title, e.g, in queue, saved, available on DVD, etc.
* Managing and displaying queues for users
* Providing conveniences such as auto-completion of partial search terms typed by a user.
* Displaying a user's ratings and reviews.
* Including functional Add and Play buttons in your web application."
the last one sounds promising, but i think that just means that if you could otherwise play the content on the specific machine/browser, you can now integrate into your onw wbepage/app...or something like that

Could we see ultra widescreen HDTVs in the future? {Engadget HD}
Jul 28th 2008 10:51AM @ squiggleslash - if you wander through ken's site he address zoom and stretch and the various ways to address it. and we are discussiing both provider and consumer side... dont have time to look back through it all right now, but he definitely advocates stretching (yes, and zooming) and has this bizarre idea that there should never be "bars" on the screen...ever! he is right that the situation where you sometimes have bars on all four sides that you cant remove is ridiculous, but if you have a wide screen tv its silly to think there wont be bars when watching 4:3 tv and vice versa. i think people need to rethink their perspective: when watching 4.3 on a 16.9 TV, there are not "bars" on the side, there is simply no picture there - just like if you have a 4.3 tv there would be no picture there - its just that on the wide tv there is empty screen, whereas if you had the square tv you would see your wall instead!
Netflix CEO says Blu-ray premiums coming "very soon" {Engadget HD}
Jul 27th 2008 12:07PM last time i checked only 6% of my Q was in blue ray, so i'll pay 6% of whatever this BS additional charge is.

Jul 25th 2008 5:11PM ken rockwell's post about seeing content with borders on ALL four sides was right on....but then he drops the ball complaining that tvs and stations dont automatically S-T-R-E-T-C-H out a 4.3 picture to a 16:9 screen.ouch. He goes further: he would rather watch an SD signal than HD ("Forget HD for cable, off-air and satellite. Watch standard-definition channels, and use a stretching mode on your wide TV to fill the screen. ") HUH???

Jul 25th 2008 12:42PM oh great, now when i go to some moron's house they'll have something 4-3 stretched out twice as far and it will be completely unwatchable while they try to tell me how great it looks!
