The Daily Grind: What's the threshold for an MMO? {Massively}

Nov 4th 2009 9:13AM It's really not an interesting question, it's simple. Persistence and progression. I say progression as opposed to levels, as you could have a system that allows for no levels with some sort of gear progression. It doesn't mean you can't have a game with MMO aspects, but those two things are the core of what we have come to know of as MMORPGs.

The Daily Grind: Do you use PlayStation Home? {Massively}

Oct 30th 2009 8:59AM I was really excited about Home, have they done anything with it though? It seems to have all but died in momentum. It just feels like something to launch while on your PS3, but a reason to turn on your PS3, and it takes a long time to launch. I know I will get downvoted, but the PS3 doesn't have that "get right into it" feel the 360 and Xbox Live does. You can form a party from the dashboard, and then figure out what you want to play, within seconds. The PS3 is just a huge dissapointment for me. I loved LBP, and I am looking forward to snagging Uncharted 2 soon (too many other PC and 360 games right now), but for the most part I got my PS3 for GT5...and guess what STILL isn't out yet. Polyphony is going the way of Sony vs Microsoft. I think they think they can get away with doing whatever the heck they want, because of who they are. Guess what, Forza 3 is fantastic, GT5 isn't the system seller of the magnitude it once was.

Ok, got off on a tangent, but my point is, Home is a portal..on a system that isn't very popular and is not conducive to community interaction. I understand it tries to create that, but it sure feels like it fails at it. I thought Home was going to be the PS3s Xbox Live Dashboard, and it has not thus far achieved that.

Team Fortress 2 knocked to $2.49 ... for the next two hours [update: it's over] {Joystiq}

Oct 29th 2009 3:44PM lol, not far off. This was posted 45mins ago, so only a little over an hour left at the point of me posting this.

Warhammer Online, now with 100% more Mac support {Massively}

Oct 29th 2009 3:05PM lol, downvote me, but I actually have a clue about what I am talking about. I have 3 40s, two of which are RR50+, one who is RR60+. The game could have been great, but like others have said, they totally screwed it up by not addressing issues. I could list 100 bullet points of bugs that are STILL in the game. I've never seen a company care less about bugs/exploits than Mythic.

As far as comments about their next game, I seriously doubt you see another Mythic MMO.

As for my original comment, there should be 1 out of the 10 people that has a Mac:

Warhammer Online, now with 100% more Mac support {Massively}

Oct 29th 2009 11:33AM I'm sure the 10 people still playing WAR are excited about this.

World of Goo birthday sale deemed 'huge success' {Joystiq}

Oct 20th 2009 1:43PM Nobody who owns a computer that will play this couldn't afford $1. They lose money on credit transaction, bandwidth, etc at one penny, so congrats on being worse than pirates.

There is being thrifty, and then being a cheap a**/thief.

Basically take the one penny people and you have the statistic for percentage of gaming population that are scumbags.

The Digital Continuum: A week with Aion {Massively}

Oct 20th 2009 8:41AM Well Cindy, I agree with you. The problem is that a lot of people see leveling as a means to an end. I have played a lot of MMOs, starting with Everquest. I used to be younger, and more geared towards hitting max level as fast as possible. Over the years my desire has shifted. For one, I am 31, have a wife, a job, house, etc. I am EXTREMELY competitive, and I kick a lot of butt in PVP, BUT I know that I will never be able to compete with people in high school, college, without jobs, so I don't. I know that come level 50, we are all on the same level, so I will be able to faceroll some people, but until then, I enjoy the ride. I said this in the Assassin channel the other day, and as I expected, got a lot of "Who the #$(* enjoys the ride?!?!" I do, I craft, I group with friends, I do the dungeons, the quests, etc. This game is gorgeous, and there is more to this game than just a greatest hits, but you have to dig deep into the game to see to what extent. Like others have said, things like spy quests are definitely unique. I did The Faded Letter solo, and that was a rush and a half, and that's just one of many spy quests.

Go out there and have fun, don't rush to 50, there is plenty to see and enjoy if you just shift your mindset.

Aion 24/7 GM support 'coming very soon' {Massively}

Oct 15th 2009 8:50AM I also loved EQ. This was something EQ did right, having a dedicated live GM during the day, and then floaters for off hours. I can even remember big issues happening during a first dragon kill or something, and the lead GM would show up in the middle of the night, presumably because he was called/paged. Having a dedicated GM like this, can lead to power hungriness, but overall he did more good than harm. If you give someone the power to make decisions, those decisions can always be swayed.

Anyhow, I think what Aion will go down as, is the single best engine design/choice with the Crytek engine. I think if Warhammer had chosen an engine like this, and tweaked it, you'd be seeing that game doing a lot better than it is. I used to defend it, that it wasn't "that bad", but this game looks 3x better and runs 3x faster, it's really amazing what they've done here. To me this game sets the bar for visuals, and not just single frame visuals, the whole package (animations, chaining of animations, weather effects, ability to do fire and water without causing game slowdown).

I think it's a really good game, that with time and the right expansions, could be a great one. This thing does a lot of things very well, don't discredit being very above average at a lot of things.

The Daily Grind: Game card or credit card? {Massively}

Oct 14th 2009 8:31AM I have always used a credit card for game subs, but I hear that if you're looking to save money, the game cards can be good. Recently I heard it mentioned that you can get NCSoft cards on special a lot, to use for game subs. I think that reason, as well as younger players are the main people who use game cards.
