Edge proclaims Halo 3 most innovative game of 2007, 2008 {Joystiq}
Aug 12th 2008 3:07PM SMG was much less innovative the Halo 3. SMG was Super Mario 64+Sonic Adventure's planet gameplay. If the innovation is in faithfuly making me feel like I'm playing a 10 year old game, then it was a great achievement. Not saying it wasn't a finely crafted, polished fun game, but there was nothing new or inventive about it. the features they mention about Halo 3... they make a good argument. Now, i'll stand with everyone else and say Portal made a bigger impact. It's humor, The portal gun, and the idea that it mad a FPS/Puzzle game, in itself is pretty amazing. It's use of gravity, physics.. all of that had not been done in games before.
But don't deny the Bungie boys their props for Forge and Theater, just cause it's not on Wii or it's not Japanese enough for you boys and girls.

Jul 11th 2008 4:18AM "Hi. I'll be playing the part of the person that will deny that a good game also needs good graphics. Just look at any good game from NES - N64 era (or even past that, depending on the game). Good games do NOT need good graphics."
Ahhh you have stumbled into my trap. Why? Because you disprove your own point. You say NES-N64 era games that were good. Well, first mistake is you're compareing, them,, obviously to what is considered good by todays standards. You see, When most of those games came out, they were AMAZING graphically. Zelda 64, Mario 64, Link To The Past, FF 4 and 6.. They were some of the most beautiful games we had seen, in their day. Street FIghter 2, Samurai Showdown, Super Mario 1, SMB 3... Holy cow, these games were bleeding edge in their day.
They had Graphics AND Gameplay. It was this whole Wii thing that decided that good visuals somehow killed the quality of a game. All this hype because some Nintendo Fanboys needed to defend their underpowered console. Or even above, some idiots who looked at a bunch of screenshots, and overhyped some game, only to be disappointed that it sucks. Because, all Wii games are Excellent since their graphics suck.
You know what though? I'll be the first, and not the last to say, a Good game has great gameplay and bad graphics (Duke Nukem Manhattan Project), a Shitty game has great graphics and crappy gameplay (Blasto, Rascal), but the legendary games, the ones that change our lives, have Great gameplay AND Great graphics (Donkey Kong (original) Goldeneye, Quake, Doom, Virtua Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Legend Of Zelda, Legond Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time, Mario 64, Soul Calibur, Sonic The Hedgehog, Megaman 1-5, Super Mario World, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy 4 and 6, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 7, Gran Toruismo, Halo, Duke Nukem 3D, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Ico, Half Life 2, Legend of Zelda: A link to the past, Mario Bros, Pac Man, Pong, Street Fighter 2..... etc...) All of those games listed were at the top of their respective generations graphically. As well as gameplay wise.
So, most, if not all the best games from Atari, to N64, an PS1, all of them had Incredible graphics. This is the first generation that has decided that putting work into good visuals, somehow kills games. Even Guitar Hero and Rock band have good visuals. A GREAT game design, is the total package. "and" not "or"
