HD DVD deathwatch: we're making it official {Engadget HD}

Feb 16th 2008 9:19AM 1. HD-DVD is a better format, what kills Blu-Ray is that some of the players are not upgradeable so you can not take advantage of the 2.0 profile if your player is a 1.1 player (non-upgradeable). Though the PS3 is firmware upgradeable. So out of the gate HD-DVD is a completed format and Blu-Ray is now catching up with the 2.0 profile to offer the same content.

2. The real difference between both formats is so small that the average human can not really detect the difference. Though the younger generation and those in IT are so wrapped around this that they believe they can see a difference. If you look closely the edges are the only difference in the formats, and you gotta be close enough to see them, so in the end who cares, both formats are a step up from DVD.

3. I think alot of people will stick with the DVD format, because Blu-Ray is so damn expensive, in their eyes, they do not want to be the first to have it. I think will get to the point that Blu-Ray will make in ground but not like DVDs, because downloadable content will begin to dominate. While I understand that most of the older generation does not like it downloadable content, the younger ones do and know very little anything else (they download movies, CDs, etc), so it will soon become a downloadable world, and the older generation will be buying DVDs. Now if Sony subsidizes the movies and the players more so they drop more in price they will make more headway into the homes.
