Samsung shows off SMT-3090 tru2way DVR {Engadget HD}
May 20th 2008 4:21PM If you look closely at the remote photo, you'll see that it has a TWC logo on it. So it's probably only going to be available for rental from your Cable provider.
NCTA, CEA expect some loose ends in digital switchover {Engadget HD}
Mar 3rd 2008 8:38AM Personally, I think the opposite. I'm not advocating Engadget keep pumping these stories all the time, but a timely piece here or there isn't too bad.
Here's why. Everyone who reads Engadget is probably ready for the 2/09 transition. However, Engadget readers will probably serve as "tech advisors" for many of their friends/family that aren't tech saavy.
If I hadn't told my in-laws about the $40 coupons, they wouldn't have known.
Eventually, the tech-noobs will see these PSAs and messages on TV and they'll call me. It's nice to know what's going on out there for the laymen.

Sharp's AQUOS P Series of TVs: world's first 22- and 26-inch 1080p LCDs {Engadget HD}
Oct 29th 2007 2:07PM The same used to be said about HDTV vs. EDTV. It used to be that 720p was unecessary on any TV at 42" or smaller.
Besides, the selling point for these Sharps is their PC connectivity. Seems as though they are meant to have a PC/Mac connected to it as well as TV inputs.
Superstation WGN going HD in November {Engadget HD}
Oct 22nd 2007 3:51PM @the_boo
WGN-9 and SuperstationWGN are different channels. Apparently, WGN-9 has been HD-digital for a while now for Chicago area viewers.
SuperstationWGN is what the people not in Chicago get. We get to see a few Cubs/Sox games and maybe a couple of Bulls games. We do not get the CW programming. In Philly, we have our own CW channel.

Xbox 360 HD DVD drive comes with free Heroes S1 set at Best Buy Sunday {Engadget HD}
Oct 22nd 2007 3:48PM @elendil850
Probably not. It's probably listed on the receipt as some sort of bonus deal and that all items need to be returned for a refund. I don't think Best Buy would make a mistake like that.

All I want for Christmas is my HDTV... and an Apple {Engadget HD}

Apple Geniuses are reportedly unbricking iPhones {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Regarding the comment about voiding warranties. The car stereo analogy doesn't really apply here. Putting in an aftermarket stereo shouldn't affect the car at all. So if your transmission goes out, they must fix it because the stereo has nothing to do with the transmission. On the other hand, if you wired up the stereo incorrectly and messed up the electrical system, they would be within their right to refuse warranty service.
For the iPhone, it's completely reasonable to conclude that unlocking software could affect the iPhone's system software.
The car stereo analogy for the iphone would be more akin to saying that you used an aftermarket headphone, now your iPhone is a brick.
Elgato brings EyeTV Support to HDHomeRun {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

This is my opinion only ...
The biggest benefit is that the tuner(s) is on a network. So basically, any Mac on the network can have DVR/PVR access, provided that the Mac has the software loaded. This is a big deal, since up until now, you had to have your Mac connected to a tuner via FW/USB2 and a coax/antenna. Not great if you want to watch TV on a Macbook in bed.
This device/software combination actually adds more flexibility to the HTMac scene. Having 2 tuners is a bonus.

Elgato brings EyeTV Support to HDHomeRun {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jul 25th 2007 8:32AM To #5,
The reason that the HDHomeRun is not compatible with Comcast's tuners is because that is not how the device works. The HDHomeRun has its own tuner (actually two of them). You connect the HDHomeRun directly to a cable/coax feed.
This device will pick up any unencrypted digital channel that your provider (Comcast) sends out. Typically, this is limited to the local HD stations in your area. Typically, you will not be able to watch/record channels like ESPN-HD, TNT-HD, MHD, HBO-HD; even if you get them on your cable-box. For that, you would need a CableCard device, which are essentially not available.
