Samsung's AMOLED-packin' YP-M1 PMP available in Korea, secret sauce still unknown {Engadget}

Aug 10th 2009 9:01AM @Ryan Trevisol

Has the screen from your iPod 5G from early 2006 been on 24/7? You must need glasses by now if it has. I was commenting on the screen life issue mainly. I don't want to have to carry multiple gadgets so I want my PMP to be my phone. I rather suspect the guts of this PMP will be based on the Samsung i8910 Omnia and Jet so will be more or less indistinguishable.

@Seraphim

I don't have an AMOLED device yet. I love the Samsung Omnia and the Jet sounds impressive. Due to replace my phone at the end of the year so might plump for one of those. Either that, or I may wait to see if a new iPhone HD is announced in January with an AMOLED display. Either way, I'll have an AMOLED something and not worry about colour shift which may happen long after I've thrown the device away;).

Samsung's AMOLED-packin' YP-M1 PMP available in Korea, secret sauce still unknown {Engadget}

Aug 10th 2009 7:56AM The blue in AMOLED screens is apparently good for 14,000 hours or 583 days use 24 hours a day. I personally replace my phone every year. I won't be losing sleep over it. I may well get a Samsung Jet for my next phone and just replace it the year after with a better one.

Samsung announces crazy fast 256GB SSD, our knees buckle {Engadget}

May 27th 2008 11:05PM 64GB is plenty big enough. I have the Samsung 64GB in my Dell M1330 and its great. I have MS Office Pro, Visual Express C++/C#, a Linux partition and some music on there. What else do you need the space for? That huge Pr0n collection of yours;)?

The price of the 64GB will drop as soon as the 256GB one comes out. That's how this technology thing works. When the 512GB SSD comes out, then the 256GB one will similarly drop in price.

You know the old saying guys, if you gotta ask you can't afford it;).

Dell unleashes the pricey XPS 730 and 730 H2C gaming rigs {Engadget}

May 1st 2008 2:15PM Well, according to the PC Mag article it looks like the games software can't really take advantage of the multiple GPUs and CPUs which is rather surprising given that they're supposed to have been waiting for the hardware to catch up with the software.

Wonder how loud this thing is though? I got a top-of-the-range workstation from Dell with dual quad core X5482s in it and that thing sounds like Concorde at close quarters. I think there's a hardware/firmware/driver fault in mine though. With the CPUs and the graphics cards in those things even with the water cooling they're going to be loud. Need to crank that surround sound system up to drown it out;).

Sony's PlayTV set for July release, UK pre-order now available {Engadget}

Apr 21st 2008 7:42PM I think they must be doing some redesign work otherwise they'd've released the thing by now. Whether it's got anything to do with the new HD standard who knows but they're way behind schedule with the release now IMHO.

I was hoping to have one by now. Ah well, such is life.

Sony's PlayTV set for July release, UK pre-order now available {Engadget}

Apr 21st 2008 9:21AM It's now no longer available!

Bizarre. I was hoping it'd come out long before 31st July. I thought that the BBC might do a terrestrial HD test for the games in London and I'd be able to watch it using PlayTV.

I suspect that Sony has delayed things because they've now agreed the terrestrial HD standard for Freeview and they're making changes to the hardware. It would explain the delay at any rate.

Not impressed with their price shennigins though.

Apr 21st 2008 5:29AM Got a link for the pre-order on Amazon? I can't find it.

Official: ASUS 8.9-inch Eee PC will include touchscreen, possibly GPS {Engadget}

Mar 26th 2008 12:17PM If Asus is going to be adding GPS to this thing then a touch screen will be a godsend. You'll be able to mount it in the car and use it like a regular GPS with touch screen. If you don't consider the touch screen an enhancement then fine. No-one's going to force you to buy one.

Samsung kills BD-UP5500 combo player before it ever truly lived {Engadget}

Mar 6th 2008 3:59PM I was rather expecting, with the demise of HD DVD as a standalone format, that we'd see combo players for the future because people will still have HD DVDs that they'll want to be able to play in 10 years time when their current players have packed in. Are all all HD DVD owners going to be left swinging in the breeze? I hope not. It shouldn't be that difficult to include HD DVD in blu-ray players once the tech has settled down.

Sony's PlayTV for PS3 gets shown off, still only for Europe {Engadget}

Feb 14th 2008 6:03PM @cyco666

Freeview is terrestrial digital TV using the DVB-T standard. I don't know what Bluwin TV is but PlayTV has nothing to do with IPTV other than allowing you to watch DVB-T standard TV across the web using your PSP. To do that though you'll need a PS3, PlayTV, DVB-T reception via a terrestrial aerial and a net connection.

Perhaps the Engadget article could've been a bit clearer on these issues though.
