First Hyundai Genesis Coupe commercial hits Korea, pricing revealed {Autoblog}

Sep 5th 2008 3:39PM Hyundai is notorious for price gouging at home. At lot of you wonder why Genesis is built like a Lexus, well because it directly competes against similarly priced Lexus GS in its home market. Americans are basically getting a Lexus GS460 competitor for only $38,000 in the US.

Therefore US$30,100 for a 3.8 Genesis Coupe is actually quite reasonable.

> You say there are no "world class" Chinese comapnies? How about Lenovo computers who bought out the former American computer giant IBM?

Some Arab company buying out Aston Martin doesn't make Arabs world class luxury auto makers. Ditto for Indians who bought out Jaguar and Land Rover.

> Or Haier who makes tons of appliences sold across the world?

Haier competes on price in low-end segment and is not considered a world-class brand.

> How long have they been at this capitalisim thing? Oh, about 25 years!

This is why I keep saying you don't know Chinese. Chinese were the capitalists before the time of Jesus Christ. Or the beginning of Roman Republic for that matter.

> Canada has very different cultural tastes from the US

Canada is obviously closer to the US culturally than to Europe.

> I think I understand Chinese culture pretty well, I studied at Peking University in Beijing for a year.

That's not enough.

> Yeah, China is different from Japan and so is the US from Canada and Mexico.

Exactly, comparing China to Japan is like comparing Mexico to the US. Totally different language, culture, and mindset. It isn't like comparing Canada to the US.

> You say that the Korean have changed in just 20 years why not the Chinese?

Because Koreans weren't so price driven to begin with. They just didn't value quality as much as they do now.

> So I have a very good understanding of East Asian, most notably Chinese culture and it didn't come from Wikipedia.

Then you should know better than anyone why there are no world-class high-quality Chinese brands today, and why it is highly unlikely that Chinese would repeat the automotive history of Japan and Korea.

Sep 3rd 2008 3:25PM > LA is not much better than Beijing and probably worse than Shanghai. But you probably think those are the only two cities in China. There is no way they have country side and smaller cities.

Shows you have never been to China.

Paris Preview: Hyundai to debut new i20 sub-compact {Autoblog}

Sep 3rd 2008 12:25PM There are no i10s and i20s in Korea. They are from India. Even Accent is a non-seller over there. Korea is strictly a D-E segment full-size sedan and SUV market in spite of $8/gallon gas price.

Sep 3rd 2008 9:28AM > Today we (US market) marvel at their quality and efficiency and laugh at the Chinese cars, just like we did the Japanese in the 1970's and the Koreans in the 1980's through the 1990's. History IS important and usally repeats itself.

Only those who don't understand East Asian society would dare to compare Chinese to Japanese or Koreans. Chinese simply don't have the concept of "Quality", "Price" is everything to them. Japanese historically prized quality above price for 1000 years, Koreans went from price-centric to quality-centric only within past 20 years. Chinese on the other hand have been price-driven for 4000 years, and they still are willing to sacrifice quality and safety in exchange for the lowest price possible. This is in their culture.

Toshiba's new ZF LCDs include Cell-based Resolution+ upscaling {Engadget HD}

Aug 28th 2008 11:55AM > Whether it's SuperUpconversion or not, "native" 960p out of 480i is not physically possible.

Tell that to NASA and CIA, which have been doing the physically impossible for decades.

> but it's incorrect to refer to the processed result as "native" 960p in any way.

Output of Super Upconversion is 960p native. This technology works by computationally fusing 9 adjacent SD frames to computationally recreate single 960p HD frame. The processor power to do this inexpensively wasn't available to CE domain until now, so the US military and government agencies were primary users of this tech.

Aug 28th 2008 10:09AM This is Super Upconversion, not XDE. In other word, 960p native from DVD and SD cable.
