$800 for a new MacBook? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 9th 2008 2:53PM Obviously meant: $1100 MacBook with ComboDrive / or / without SuperDrive.

$800 for a new MacBook? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 9th 2008 2:44PM It will of course remain to be seen what will be included in the $800 model.

Many people agree that Apple systems are a bit pricey for some of the features they have or lack. Note: I've seen the comparisons where with select machines the Mac Pro is cheaper than upgraded Dells, HPs, ... I'm just talking about the $1100 MacBook with only SuperDrive & 1GB RAM and the basic mini. Wanting a DVD burner forces you to upgrade to the next model, which in this day and age shouldn't be required. It costs Apple probably more to keep combo drives on hand than to go all-out with SuperDrives.

Anyway. I welcome the thought of cheaper Macs.

Motorola VC6096 is world's heaviest WinMo device {Engadget}

At that screen size they should have used SVGA, imo, and the device would be more versatile.

First Look: Spreadsheet for iPhone {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 2nd 2008 9:16PM Doesn't that look like too much data shown on screen for the limited screen resolution the iPhone has?

HD Guru evaluates 125 HDTVs in the resolution loss test {Engadget HD}

Sep 29th 2008 3:20PM Initially I thought (hoped ?) this was a review of HDTV channels which was going to finally give proof to how incredibly poor cable HDTV is.

Maybe they could somehow do a standardized test of that?

We're sick and tired of the HD ads from various companies claiming to be the best when the majority of their stations are just a pixelated headache. So many times it is like watching amateur webcasts.

Btw. We have Time Warner Cable (since they bought Adelphia)

Washington county may ban car washing at home {Autoblog}

Sep 24th 2008 8:39AM Very true.
Still I rather have them pressure other cities/counties/... to do the same; rather than banning washing your car in your driveway.

Volvo looks to locusts to prevent accidents {Autoblog}

Sep 24th 2008 8:25AM I've studied traffic, road design, preventive driving, accidents etc a bit in the US and Western Europe. A couple major differences stand out in terms of traffic education, laws and driving practice. Ignoring the big cities (they seem to come with their own rules & practices regardless of continent); I do observe these things in the US: far less safe distance to absolutely none is kept between vehicles, slow traffic does not keep right (any lane goes), no turn signal use, all lanes are passing lanes, yellow traffic light = go for it no matter how far you are from the intersection.
These things make situational awareness much harder (+ exhausting) and safe driving practices sometimes next to impossible because traffic comes from everywhere, drivers don't prompt others about their intentions and some behave absolutely erratic ( the fast & furious guys zipping through all lanes, no signaling, clearing other cars by less than a foot ... )
I am curious where Volvo is going with this and definitely look forward to reading more about it.

Washington county may ban car washing at home {Autoblog}

Sep 23rd 2008 9:59AM We should first look at the big polluters and industries before we look at the individual homeowner. And, how about all the official, unofficial and personal junk yards everywhere; where vehicles and machinery of all kind is wasting away.

Washing my car a few times a year does nothing negative to my garden / lawn and the direct environment surrounding me. And, weren't soap and some phosphates said to promote plant growth? Which then fights global warming?

Along with the above car washing ban it will of course become illegal to wash my windows & patio furniture. All the big businesses, industrial smoke stacks and vehicles on the road cause a ton of black soot to land on my window sills and patio furniture every week. Washing these means you contaminate the soil, so it should be banned and we need to take our furniture to the patio wash business.

Plus, in the above proposal, the waste water from all the car washes is treated, right?

Blu-ray support destined for Mac OS X 10.5.6? {Engadget HD}

Sep 22nd 2008 1:58PM I hope those rumors are true, though it is always a wait & see situation ... and there is Apple hardware that needs an update more urgently than the MB & MBP do. The Mac mini hasn't been updated in over a year. The LCDs haven't been updated, in what, 2 years now?
