Switched digital support for CableCARD still on track for second quarter {Engadget HD}

Mar 7th 2008 9:32AM According to wikipedia, "The FCC has ruled that starting July 1, 2007, cable customers are able to purchase DVRs and other 3rd party devices to legally view digital cable without having to rent hardware from the cable company."

Aparantly that would need to be amended to "The FCC has ruled that starting July 1, 2007, cable customers are able to purchase DVRs and other 3rd party devices to legally view digital cable AND STILL HAVE to rent hardware from the cable company."

Switched digital support for CableCARD still on track for second quarter {Engadget HD}

Mar 7th 2008 9:28AM From what I can make out DCAS could work as a USB Dongle (with a software/firmware update) since it is just some circuitry and a chip. I'm sure the same is true of a "tuning resolver". In a time when electronics can get smaller and smaller, why are these devices getting bigger and bigger. They consume more power since it will also need to be left running the whole time, when I'm sure it could just get power from the device it is plugged into. It would be cheaper to produce and more people would want it. Also, if it's cheaper, you've got more people that would just get one rather than try to find a way around using one. I'm sure i'm over simplifying things, but when will Cable/Satellite Companies realize that the end users are consumers and not the enemy that they treat us as.

Win a Philips 42PFL5603D 42-inch 1080p HDTV! {Engadget HD}

Feb 5th 2008 5:14PM Nothing better than being able to watch TV after the big switch off. Of course then there is the question of how to dispose of my old CRT whilst still being environmentally friendly.

SageTV reveals STX-HD100 HD Media Extender {Engadget}

Nov 27th 2007 10:57AM All I need is a way to output the monitor signal and sound wirelessly from the office computer to the TV downstairs. It's not something I do much, but it would nice. That way I could watch "webisodes" on a decent screen rather than the family crowding around the desk in the office.

Turning a VCR into a media PC case {PVR Wire}

Dec 14th 2006 9:58AM What a brilliant idea! Good for the environment, the pocket and the eye. Maybe I've found a use for my parent's Betamax after all

TiVo with a Twist: Ways to Enhance the TiVo Experience {PVR Wire}

Nov 3rd 2006 9:29AM Love the idea of TiVo Lite. After all, if I had a VCR I would just take the tape upstairs and watch it there. Now I have to play the show downsstairs to record it to VCR and then take the tape upstairs

The 30 second skip is something I will never understand. My VCR has one, my DVD recorder has one, why to TV companies think that we do not sue them, isn't that why we use VCR's and PVR's? It's to watch a 60 minute program in 40 (once you skip all the commercials, titles and recaps).

My other gripe is being able to play iTunes music on the TiVo. I don't see how it's removing the DRM since it has to be on the same network as the computer. I would even "authorize" it as one of my 5 allowable machines.

For TiVo online, how about being able to set up a wish list on line? Better still, be able to check my existing wishlists on line for upcoming programs so that I could set them from any computer.

Nov 2nd 2006 1:16PM Could you then shunt these videos to your TiVo box in the main viewing room and vice versa.

TiVo fighting FCC over CableCARD, Verizon's FiOS service {Engadget}

Oct 19th 2006 2:51PM Surely, if they've had 10 years to incorporate this technology, they have lost all rights to any waivers. How many times have they upgraded their systems in that time? From 550 MHz to 750Mhz and now to 1GHz.
Direct TV and Dish have the cablecards. My Sister in the UK has had one on her Saterlite TV system for about 10 years. You'd think by now that any new boxes produced by Motorolla and Scientific Atlanta would already have the cableCard slots built in, but that does not seem to be the case.
