PlayOn media server brings Hulu / YouTube to consoles, Netflix coming soon? {Engadget HD}
Aug 20th 2008 9:08AM According to the docs, the server determines whether the devices supports the container of the stream. If it does support the stream, it simply proxies the stream. If it doesn't support the stream, the server will transcode it to mpeg2. This is great for devices that don't support flv.
PlayOn media server brings Hulu / YouTube to consoles, Netflix coming soon? {Engadget HD}
Aug 19th 2008 8:05PM It works on the PCH! Well mostly. some of the Hulu.com videos play, some don't. I seem to be getting about an 80% success rate so far. A very small sample size though.
I assume it is doing some sort of transcoding b/c I know the PCH doesn't currenlty support flash.
Stargate-themed home theater saves you a trip to space {Engadget HD}
Jun 19th 2008 10:45AM But why would he have that stargate in an Atlantis theme. I mean everyone knows that the Atlantis stargate looks completely difference from that....Geez, that looks much more like the Earth gate than the Atlantis gate.
Verizon pushing FiOS internet to 50Mbps throughout US {Engadget}
Jun 18th 2008 9:45AM At that price I think it would make more sense to buy a dual-wan router and get a completely separate service provide. At least then you would have failover capabilites in case verizon's service goes down.
Netflix tidbits: DVD business could peak in a decade, Mac streaming on the way {Engadget HD}
Jun 13th 2008 9:04AM Yeah, but Music downloads had to compete with an established physical media. The CD came out well before digital downloads were available.
If we are talking about HD Movies, there is no established physical media yet. Blu-ray still has a ways to go to prove itself in the mass market. If the HD download/streaming options increase quickly enough over the next 18 months, I could see there being an interesting war in the HD movie space between physical media & downloads.

Jun 11th 2008 12:28PM I second the vote for the Popcorn Hour A-100. So far it has played just about every single file I have thrown at it. Plus its one of the most inexpensive solutions out there.
"Study" finds zany crowd willing to pay $9 for earlier release HD VOD films {Engadget HD}
Apr 16th 2008 11:10AM My only guess is that these people don't already have a bluray player. So $9 is a deal when you consider the cost difference to buying a brand new player & then renting the movie.
