Is your Comcast HD quality up to snuff? {Engadget HD}
Mar 20th 2008 10:49PM The FCC's OTARD rule prohibits homeowner's associations from blocking satellite dish installs in most cases, as long as the homeowner installs the dish in an area that is solely accessible to that homeowner. They can block installs in "shared" areas of multiple dwelling units (for example, a wall or roof that you share with a neighbor). The relevant FCC rule is here:

Poll: How many HD channels do you have? {Engadget HD}
Mar 1st 2008 1:20PM the screenshot is from BeyondTV, by Snapstream. I use it for recording HDTV off-air (from an antenna). It is also compatible with some satellite TV setups (though not in HD as I recall) as well as with some of the cable tuners that support clear QAM. It can't deal with encrypted digital cable, so forget about using it to record HD off of cable for anything other than the regular broadcast channels, since the typical cable system encrypts those channels.
IMO, best guide UI for recording all types HD off of cable is probably still TiVo's. TiVos support cable card so can handle the encrypted streams.
LG touts first converter box approved for 2008 digital changeover {Engadget HD}
Oct 8th 2007 11:06PM the $40 vouchers can be used only on these converter boxes. the program is set up so that the vouchers can be redeemed only on purchase of a converter box; they're not good on anything with a screen, a PVR, a DVD player, a VCR, etc etc. being a government program there are lengthy rules about what does and doesn't qualify, and in fact to qualify for the $40 voucher program, a manufacturer has to submit their device for government testing and pass. This article is basically saying that LG is the first manufacturer to pass all of the tests and quality.
