Ask Engadget HD: Which AV receiver has the best upscaling chip? {Engadget HD}

Jul 9th 2008 5:47PM I knew that they were commonly owned, but rebadging is a different matter altogether.

I can understand using the same digital setup. It is digital after all. However, I would expect the analog section to be considerably better in the Marantz unit (based on the market position and price difference).

I am a big fan of Marantz, but not particularly of their prices. I'm also a big fan of getting value for my hard earned dollar. That said, I do tend to buy a bit on the high end with my theatre stuff (paradigm, B&W, rotel, marantz, pioneer elite, etc). Still, if I can get the same performance at a cheaper price, I'm all about it.

Jul 9th 2008 3:07PM TrentD,

Do you have any backup for that assertion?

After hearing the difference between a sony and a Marantz in MY setup a few years ago, I have been wanting a Marantz badly. I couldn't care less about upscaling, but I was waiting for a unit (like the 8002) that would at least convert a component 480p signal to 480p via HDMI so that I could have one cord to the projector.

I'm very interested if your assertion has merit. That may push me toward a Denon, Integra, or Rotel setup instead of the Marantz I was considering.

Thanks.

Jul 1st 2008 10:37PM I have a 360 and not a PS3. Hopefully adoption by one will force all.... including Tivo and the other set top boxes.

Loud commercials actually not that loud, just startling {Engadget HD}

Jul 1st 2008 10:06PM I have a great idea; normalize the volume in the shows themselves. It's just as annoying to turn it up to hear someone whispering and then get blown out by a scene switch.

Jun 19th 2008 6:00PM So how much power do I need for my house?

What about smaller units?

I live in IL where we're seeing 50% year on year energy price increases, and I'm about ready to do something about it.

Jun 13th 2008 10:14AM MS is restricting everyone to 80Gb storage and I think 2Gb RAM? for an XP license now. I'm not sure about the RAM spec, but I know they have limits on at least storage space @ 80Gb and some of the other standard specs.

Los Angeles to sue Time Warner Cable over shoddy service {Engadget}

Jun 6th 2008 12:14PM You guys complainging about small payouts don't get it.

The point of class action is that each plaintiff only has a couple hundred, or few thousand (or less) dollars in damages. Why in the world would each of those plaintiffs pay 100k or so to individually sue for 1k bucks? They wouldn't, and the big company continues it's bad practices.

Class actions allow all those little claims to pile up. Once you make the money pile big enough, you'll get a law firm to take the case on speculation that they may at some future point get paid for laying out tons of expenses in the interim.

The point isn't to make each plaintiff rich. The point is to hit the company hard enough in the pocket book that they quick screwing each little plaintiff and get their acts together.

Seriously, I have charter. I don't care if I get a penny from them. But if my service was on every day when I went home, I'd be ecstatic.
