Around Azeroth: Partial eclipse of the heart {WoW}

Dec 3rd 2008 10:42AM Just being nitpicky, but Northrend *is* part of Azeroth. Saying that players are abandoning Azeroth for Northrend is like saying European explorers abandoned Earth for North America.

Analyst blames Xbox RRoD on MS-designed graphics chip {Joystiq}

Jun 11th 2008 2:00PM Where is this guy getting his info? There are so many things wrong with that article. First, Microsoft didn't design the 360 GPU; ATI did. It was widely known that ATI was designing the 360's GPU before the system was even released, and the 360 was prominently displayed in ATI's booth at E3 '05. From the information in the article, the only apparent reason for this "analyst" to think otherwise was a comment from Robbie Bach that "Microsoft-initiated design" was to blame for the RROD (likely referring to the cooling, or some other Microsoft-designed aspect of the system). The article also mentions that the RROD forced a recall. Although, due to the problems, MS extended the warranty, there was never a recall. So much for checking your facts. No, it's much easier to just take a windbag "analyst" at his word.

Wildfires prompt Midway to evacuate San Diego office {Joystiq}

Oct 25th 2007 9:23AM "Mortal Kombats and Unreal Tournaments remain in the hands of employees dutifully tinkering at home."

Well, the Mortal Kombat team is located in Chicago at the main office, and Midway is only publishing Unreal Tournament -- Epic is developing it --, so your last comment doesn't make any sense. It makes even less sense that you tagged the post with MK and UT, when it really has nothing to do with them. I know this is "just a blog", but you guys could at least try to get your facts straight.

TGS07: new Devil May Cry 4 gameplay footage [update] {Joystiq}

Sep 20th 2007 9:03AM Joystiq really needs to improve the quality of it's bloggers (or perhaps have a "blogger-in-chief" that reviews items before they're posted). I think the only thing that's correct in this post is that this is a trailer for DMC4. While not "in-game" the footage is clearly real-time "in-engine", not pre-rendered. As stated in several of the comments above, Dante is fighting Nero, not himself. And finally, "the devil may cry twice" is not a pun (it's not funny or clever either). I realize that this is just a blog, and not a "real" news site, but at least try to get your posts correct.

PAX 07: Audio from the Wil Wheaton keynote {Joystiq}

Aug 27th 2007 4:36AM I didn't have a problem with Wil Wheaton until, while being very vocal when the video game voice actors were going to strike for more money, he went so far as to say that the voice actors should get royalties. That's pretty arrogant (or greedy), given that many developers rarely give royalty bonuses to the artists and programmers who work long hours for months or years on a game. So for Wil to think that the couple of hours spent recording his voice is worth more than the thousands of hours put in by those that actually make the game is ridiculous.

It just shows that, despite all of his "geek cred," Wil is still just another of the self-important, egocentric Hollywood asses who think the world revolves around actors, and who are delusionally ignorant of how the rest of the world actually works.

CableCARD-equipped Dell XPS 410 desktops now available {Engadget}

Aug 20th 2007 4:25PM It's still there, but as I stated in my comments above, it's only available with the most expensive configuration option.

CableCARD-equipped Dell XPS 410 desktops now available {Engadget}

Aug 20th 2007 1:34PM What's really annoying about this is that you can only get the digital cable tuner on the top-end 410 configuration, which forces you to buy a Blu-ray drive, and a monitor (both optional in the other, lower-priced configurations). Many people were expecting to be able to add the DCT to the low-end 410 config, and then remove the monitor, speakers, etc. for a sub-$1000 digital cable Media Center. I gave up waiting for Dell to offer the DCT option on the 410 (which they have been showing to the media for *months*), and bought one from Velocity Micro. Now that I see how Dell is offering the DCT, I'm glad I didn't wait.

As an addtional side comment on Dell configuration page -- it looks like they make it intentionally confusing to remove many big options (monitor, speakers, etc.). On many of the component pages the "No [component]" option isn't at the top of the list where it would make sense; instead, it's hidden somewhere in the middle of the other options, making it hard to find unless you make an dedicated effort to find it(especially since it's in a different spot for each component). I'd guess many customers have purchased system with components that they would have like to remove, but, because of the confusing option layout, didn't realize that there was an option to remove them. Intentionally trying to confuse your customers into paying for options that they don't need is a really low, cheap business tactic.

Crown this year's NFL broadcast champion {Engadget HD}

Jan 26th 2007 1:59PM "It's as if Fox is compressing their own feed "before letting the providers do it (again)."

They ARE compressing it. That's how they're able to show every game in HD. They made a big deal, when they started showing all the games in HD, about how they were going to be able to fit 3 or 4 games in the same bandwidth as it normally take s for one. Unfortunately, the picture quality suffers (Wide shots look *horrible*).

CBS doesn't do this, so that's part of the reason why they have a better picture quality, and why they don't broadcast every game in HD (not enough bandwidth yet).

CES: Sony ships 1mil PS3s in NA, targets 6mil worldwide by March '07 {Joystiq}

Jan 7th 2007 11:05PM #11: It wouldn't be possible for you watch Blu-Ray movies on a PS3 through an Optoma HD70 @ 1080i.

There are two reasons for this:

1. The PS3 doesn't output 1080i. It outputs 720p & 1080p, but not 1080i.

2. The Optoma HD70 you say you are using does not display 1080i. It diplays a max. resolution of 1280x720 (720p). It's also DLP-based, which means it's a fixed-pixel display, and doesn't display interlaced resolutions, so even if it were capable of 1920x1080, it would be 1080p, not 1080i.
