Bandwidth restraints hindering New Zealand's Freeview HD expansion {Engadget HD}

Aug 23rd 2008 1:09AM Actually they did consider whether to make it terrestrial only. But they found that it would be sub-optimal - the shorter wavelength UHF signal required for digital does not propagate as far as the VHF signals. There will always be areas of NZ that just can't be viably covered by terrestrial signals due to its hilliness. Satellite always works as long as you can see the right area of the sky. Believe me they wouldn't have spent all the money having two different broadcast systems if they didn't think it necessary.

It was decided also that they couldn't do just satellite as this would require everyone to get a satellite dish where as an aerial -> aerial upgrade path makes more sense and it is more likely that manufacturers would integrated DVB-T into their televisions.

And they didn't go MPEG-4 from the beginning for satellite because people had already bought DVB-S boxes because TVNZ had been broadcasting one and 2 for some time over MPEG-2.

iPhone 2.0.1 breaking some carrier unlocks {Engadget}

Aug 5th 2008 5:11PM @Mark is right.

It's Vodafone with an f, not Vodaphone with a ph. (Heh even my Firefox spell check knows it's wrong.)

Yeah it's only a trademark but the misspelling always annoys me.

iPhone camping rule of thumb: don't wear a suit {Engadget Mobile}

Jul 9th 2008 8:04AM The way the first guy in the yellow chair's sitting almost makes it looks like someone's photoshopped out his lower torso.

BlackBerry Media Sync for iTunes makes all-too-brief appearance {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 30th 2008 12:48AM FYI, Nokia makes something very similar called Nokia Multimedia Transfer that syncs your Nokia device with iTunes.

Unfortunately it is only available for the Mac (but it works great).

Android on a Nokia N95 captured on video {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 19th 2008 12:04AM Wow, so apparently the N95 can play full screen video showing Android.

Rumor: Mac Fusion - a new developer Mac {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 9th 2008 1:37AM Well @Loadstar to be fair re the Mac OS X / OS X brand - you may remember the photos from WWDC show that Apple has posters up saying 'OS X iPhone' and 'OS X Leopard' so it could be they are relaxing this a little.

Rumor: Mac Fusion - a new developer Mac {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Jun 9th 2008 12:51AM Fake.

Here's why: Apple *always* refers to the intel chip as an 'Intel Core 2 Duo processor' (check every mention on Apple.com if you like) *never* as Intel Core 2 Duo chip as in this mockup.

FAIL.

Video: OQO hacked to run Leopard, now world's smallest Mac {Engadget}

Apr 29th 2008 2:33AM Unless there was hardware hacking involved I'm pretty sure the headline should be the other way around: "Leopard hacked to run on OQO"

Java-based client spreads Skype far and wide {Engadget Mobile}

Apr 28th 2008 3:29AM Personally without [proper] voice calls this application seems completely half baked to me (although I think it looks great, especially for a Java app).

Something like Fring can do Skype over data though.

Nokia Internet Tablets to get Ubuntu and Qt ports {Engadget}

Apr 24th 2008 11:39PM One thing I really like about Ubuntu Mobile is that it looks like it has a great UI https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileAndEmbedded/UserInterface (at least IMHO).
