'Brick' MacBook Pro leaked in up-close spy shot? {Engadget}
Oct 8th 2008 11:33PM I was thinking about that too. As an engineer who works for an aluminum producer, machining ingots or billets is a lot more expensive than pressing or extruding out a shape. Also machining out a laptop case would take significantly longer than assembling one from 3 or 4 pieces. On top of everything else the price of aluminum has skyrocketed, along with most other metals, over the past 3 years and machining leaves you with a lot of left over scrap. Even if Apple sells their scrap to be re-melted and recoups some of their materials cost, I don't see how this laptop isn't significantly more expensive than the current MacBooks, if this is indeed not a fake.
Anaheim-Vegas maglev train project gets $45 million infusion {Engadget}
Jun 8th 2008 9:58AM Maglev is very cool technology, but I want to know why they're not building a regular high speed train like the TGV in France or the Ave in Spain? Those trains are almost as fast(~200 mph), use proven technology, and are much cheaper per mile to build. This strikes me as a bunch of politicians just wanting to have the latest toy. Don't get me wrong I'm all in favor of more trains in this country and love riding them when I'm in Europe, but I don't think they've thought this through. Go read about how much trouble the Chinese have had with their roughly 20 mile maglev in Shanghai.

Jan 1st 2008 8:42PM I have fiber Internet and TV service thru our local utility here in Jackson, TN and sometime in the last 3 or 4 days they added TLC HD, Animal Planet HD, Science Channel HD, A&E HD, History Channel HD, and the biggest shocker of all HDNET which I thought was only available if you had satellite.
