VUDU movie set-top-box wanders into select Best Buy locations {Engadget HD}
May 26th 2008 11:43PM A lot of people I know are looking for the end-all solution, the one that ties together the music and movies they have, as well as making it easier to get the music and movies they want without sacrificing the quality they are already at least (or, supreme-being-permitting, allow them access to BETTER quality than they have access to now). VUDU does not yet allow for any sort of integration with consumers' existing movie libraries, whether they be in DVD's, Bluray's, or already stored on a hard drive. VUDU may be successful in selling this to people who don't already have a decent movie collection, and probably have no intention of ever owning a movie themselves, but anyone who has an existing movie collection that I know would be a little frustrated to have a simple-to-use movie box that does not help them integrate the movies they have with the movies they want.

May 25th 2008 10:46AM This has been sold down here in Florida out of Sound Advice stores for months now. Not really Vudu's first foray into brick and mortar. And it seems to be serving a niche market because of its lack of integration, not to mention lack of HD content.
Comcast upgrading infrastructure in South Florida: more HD on the way {Engadget HD}
Mar 6th 2008 9:08AM I live down in Coral Gables, and we've had those channels for awhile too. If they wanna give me more, I won't turn it down...
Why Blu-ray will be the next DVD {Engadget HD}
Mar 4th 2008 12:41AM FYI, I work in a retail a/v store, and all of our receivers, starting at $199, have a multichannel input and optical inputs. HTIB's are another story altogther, but I think Ben was also trying to point out that most consumers are much more worried about getting the best picture than getting the same quality in sound, hence the reference to toslink, which requires re-encoding the "HD audio" back to dolby surround or dts surround for transmission.
Audiophiles can't tell the difference between Monster Cable and coat hangers {Engadget HD}
Mar 4th 2008 12:19AM Where was this test done? A showfloor at a box mover or a real hifi/home theater shop? I would never recommend my friend to go into your corner box mover and buy cabling period. The quality of the interconnects/speaker cabling makes a difference relative to the quality of the components you're using. Don't dismiss the difference good cabling can make in the enjoyment of well-recorded material simply because your budget doesn't make it feasible for you. I'll agree, there are plenty of companies out there that do what the non-box-mover-marketed Monster cable lines do at less of a price, but make sure you yourself make a trip out to a real home theater/hifi retailer who knows what real fidelity sounds like and can demo it for you in a realistic environment. I sincerely believe that the majority of people can hear the difference an interconnect/speaker cable can have on a system, they just don't talk to anybody who can explain it to them. Much like explaining to a $12-a-bottle Reisling lover why a $200 Cabernet costs what it does. That other dork that used the wine analogy obviously stands on the other side of the fence than I do, but I've stood on both sides and chosen mine based on my tests with my own home system, which lets me completely enjoy my music and movies. Again, it's all relative to the other components in the system.
Video is more important than audio {Engadget HD}
Feb 11th 2008 12:48AM f* that. I use my sound system every time I watch tv. I don't have any audio running to my tv; it's pointless once you've heard what real speakers can do. I don't have a dedicated room, I don't even have surround sound. I have really great stereo, and it sounds WAY more enjoyable than those HTIB's that are as limited in future compatability as they are in sonic clarity. I blame advertising for ripping off the ignorant consumer and not explaining to them that an important part of their budget should be spent on audio, not just sucked up entirely by a flat panel. Great sound gives a good flat panel's video a 3d quality it can never achieve on it's own, whether the sound is good stereo or surround.
WiFi-enabled universal remote pulls codes from the web {Engadget HD}
Jan 30th 2008 12:01PM No one is going to put bluetooth into a universal remote. Because of the way that the spectrum is dedicated to companies, it does not make sense the same way that RF-only devices would not make sense in a home theater system. IR, or IR-to-RF-to-IR, codes are the way things are gonna be controlled for the foreseen future in home theater. To control your ps3, just wait for the modded remote to come out and give you IR to program into your Harmony!
Logitech launches Harmony One {Engadget HD}
Jan 6th 2008 4:34AM Try checking for the now-available IR kits for ps3. The IR codes are in most of the public databases now, and that will happen MUCH sooner than any of these remotes will support bluetooth. In fact, you'll probably turn your face way cooler shades than blue before any theater remote supports bluetooth...just a shot in the dark...
Plasma vs LCD: Plasma is still better {Engadget HD}
Dec 22nd 2007 1:50AM I'm not sure which plasmas you believe are better than the pioneer kuro plasmas. Everyone except for Consumer Reports seems to agree that the kuro plasmas are the best plasmas made today, and that's only because Consumer Reports seems to ogle anything Panasonic makes. I've been in stores when all the TV's are set to SD broadcast, and the only tv's that are watchable are the kuro's because of their scaling and their natural colors.
Hilton's Sight+Sound suites deliver DirecTV, HD niceties {Engadget HD}
Aug 2nd 2007 11:13PM Please tell me they included a subwoofer and a universal remote with this stuff...otherwise, it sounds like a half-a$$ attempt at an impressive, if concise, "home theater experience"
