Engadget HD Podcast 096 - 08.06.2008 {Engadget HD}
Aug 7th 2008 1:12AM In reference to the Blu-ray versus DVD adoption rate discussion one big advantage Blu-ray has going for it that we often forget about is it's backwards compatibility with DVD. I also think if studios came out with some Blu-ray short term exclusives it would boost the number of players sold. I remember I bought my first DVD player because Gladiator was only available on DVD at first. Can you imagine if the Dark Knight was initially released only on Blu? Of course it would help if the player and media prices dropped as well.

Jul 3rd 2008 8:46PM MKV is not the only container option for making H.264 video with multichannel audio. Nero recode can make MP4 files with H.264 and AC3 multichannel audio.
MountainWest Sports Network comes to DirecTV on August 27th {Engadget HD}
Jun 8th 2008 4:45PM Wow. Brendan, do you own stock in Tivo or something? This story is positive news for the MWC, unless you have Dish, then you are in the same boat you were in last season. It is interesting how you took my preference for one technology over another and turned it into an attack on my team and moral integrity. I have not looked into it much but any technology Dish might have stolen, they will have to pay for in the long run and if I have to switch companies so be it. But right now I prefer the Dish HD-DVR. I would actually prefer to use media center but prefer to wait until Directv gets their HD PC tuner out on the market.

Jun 8th 2008 1:35AM Now if they would only put the Mountain on Dish. It is a sad day when I have to choose between BYU football with a crappy HD-DVR and a good HD-DVR with no BYU football.
Salt Lake City's 2NEWS makes the switch to HD {Engadget HD}
Apr 22nd 2008 10:37PM Finally, more than one option for news in HD. I always felt cheated watching 2 news in SD as CBS appears to have a better HD feed here than NBC. It has also been nice to finally have the Jazz games in HD on KJZZ.

Mar 26th 2008 11:17PM I am really looking forward to this update, especially since Opera 9.5 is STILL not available!
Poll: So, what are you HD DVD early adopters going to do? {Engadget HD}
Feb 16th 2008 1:32PM As a purple supporter that has invested in both formats I think Toshiba needs to come out with an inexpensive purple player and offer rebates to anyone you has already purchased an HD-DVD player as a way of saying thanks to their supporters. The dual format technology is already available so they (Toshiba and other CE companies) might as well use it.
Engadget HD Podcast 065 - 1.06.2008 {Engadget HD}
Jan 6th 2008 11:53AM As a dual format supporter who leans Blu I was a little disapointed by this news. I feel that the format war has been good for driving down hardware and media prices. I always figured Blu-Ray would win out just not this soon. This will likely halt any cost cutting by the Blu-Ray camp because of no competition. If Toshiba was smart they would cut their losses and come out with a dual format player so consumers would still have the option to play their old media while being able to enjoy new movies. As was discussed in the podcast some sort of rebate program would not be bad either for movies or players.
AT&T considering video conference calling? {Engadget Mobile}
Jul 27th 2007 9:44PM It is most likely the HTC Kaiser (AT&T 8925). It has a forward facing camera and HSUPA so it is probably the first AT&T phone that can handle video conferencing.
Xbox 360 adds 1080p, HD DVD drive is $170 US for November 22nd in Japan {Engadget}
Sep 21st 2006 12:23AM No, you are the one spreading false information. Anybody who knows anything about high definition displays knows that 1080p sends twice as much data/second as 1080i. This is why 1080i has only slightly more bandwidth than 720p. henning was right when he said 1080p/60 is 60 frames per second while 1080i/60 is 60 fields per second. A field is only half of a frame, therefore even if the signal is deinterlaced you only get 30 full progressive frames/second from a 1080i source. There is a good graphic in Crutchfield catalogs that show the difference in bandwidth between 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.
