Top Chef: Flamboyant maroon pan-seared chipmunk {Slashfood}

Apr 24th 2008 10:36AM Let's look at the dishes in the elimination challenge:

Green perplexed tofu: It was definitely green and tofu was the centerpiece. It was also unusual which helped with the perplexed part. Oh. And it tasted good.

Yellow love vanilla: The soup was yellow, and it did incorporate vanilla. Was vanilla the star of the dish? no. And did it incorporate love? I'm not quite sure. But it tasted good, and that's why they were in the top two.

Purple Depressed Bacon: Not very purple. Not very depressed. But there was bacon, even though the pork tenderloin was the centerpiece. No complaints about the taste.

Magenta Drunk Polish Sausage: Not very magenta, and a small bit of tequila doesn't make it drunk, and chirzo isn't polish. Taste wise it was okay.

Orange Turned-On Asparagus: The goat cheese was orange, and they felt they needed to do many orange (fruit) things too, along with the asparagus. But there were many complaints all around. The bread. the orgy of flavors.

Top two, are obviously there for tasting the best. I think the Tofu did a better job with the task, but Vanilla attempted to do something.

Taste wise, the next two are Bacon and Polish Sausage. The Bacon team had bacon... The Polish Sausage team had chirzo... Back to this in a second.

Asparagus did the requirements relatively well, but didn't have good tasting food.

The choice for bottom two. Were two fold. Asparagus because they tasted worse. And Polish Sausage for making only an okay dish and not following the directions very well.

I would have gotten rid of Asparagus too. If you are not going to follow the rules, you need to hit it out of the park. Otherwise you risk being eliminated, but is that a bigger crime then making the least tasty dish? I think not.

Kojima Productions clarifies MGS4's 'implied child rape' {PS3 Fanboy}

Apr 23rd 2008 12:39PM I'm waiting for Fox News to report of the the 'Rape'Station 3, and how it features MGS4 which has "scenes" of child rape, where they forget to mention "implied". And a panel of "experts" who have never played video games before, let alone MGS4.

BMW North America Chairman to become Rolls-Royce CEO {Autoblog}

Apr 22nd 2008 6:09PM I don't see the 60th anniversary of his birth having anything to do with the move to Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is still a part of BMW.

I also assume that the 17 years at Rolls-Royce was with the other entities known as Rolls-Royce (Rolls-Royce Limited, Rolls-Royce Motors, or Rolls-Royce plc). VW bought Rolls-Royce Motors and Bentley from Vickers in 1998. And a dispute between the rights for the name "Rolls-Royce" led them to sell BMW the name. Everything else "Rolls-Royce" became part of Bentley in VW.

Top Chef goes Project Runway {Slashfood}

Apr 4th 2008 10:47PM Let's look at how the dishes stack up.

Salmon - Very good and unique and daring
Beef - Very good and not a derivative dish

Tortellini - Well done, but not especially innovative
Quail - Same
Lamb - Same

Summer Roll - Not good.

The problem with this task was that other than the summer roll, everyone did very very well. The Salmon and the Beef were both unique, and that definately gave them a leg up on the middle three. The beef dish didn't tie in well with the movie, but first and foremost is taste. The middle three were probably close taste wise and ingenuity, so what differentiated them was how well they tied into the movie. Unfortunately for the lamb, they didn't sell it well, as that was one of the parts of the task. Thank goodness there was someone who didn't make very good food.

And I was thinking of white chocolate + wasabi + celery root + heavy cream, and I think it works. Not very intuitive, but it works. The fat and sugar from the white chocolate and heavy cream balances out the wasabi, and the celery root gives the sauce bulk and depth.

Comcast drops 22 new HD channels on Bloomington, IL {Engadget HD}

Mar 27th 2008 2:38AM I'm feeling a little envious. In some respects it seems they are catching up. Here's the channel my local TWC is missing from the list.

ABC Family HD
Disney Channel HD
TLC HD
USA HD
AMC HD
Sci-Fi HD

Comcast SportsNet (Chicago) HD - Local
WGN HD - WGN is weird.
NFL Network HD - Don't even get regular NFL Network

Suddenlink, LIN TV reach retrans deal, restore KXAN & KBIM {Engadget HD}

Mar 26th 2008 10:30AM LIN TV, "fair market value" is higher than what other local TV companies definition of "fair market value". That is why TWC Austin doesn't carry KNVA in HD. LIN TV, owner of KNVA, the local CW affiliate, can't seem to come to terms with TWC Austin.

That combined with Belo Corp's KVUE converting the ABC 720p feed to 1080i for broadcast is ridiculous.

SPOILER ALERT: 12 Hours of Sebring officially in the books {Autoblog}

Mar 16th 2008 5:35PM Good to see the Porsche RS Spyder finally win at Sebring, but Penske Racing is not going to Le Mans this year. My guess is Dyson Racing will not go either. That means no Porsche RS Spyders on the Circuit de la Sarthe.

A little sad to see the Acura/Fernandez Racing entry disqualified. Damage during the race caused them to fail inspection, and not because of cheating on their part.

Looking towards this year's ALMS season, P1 and GT1 seem very boring. The Porsche vs Acura battle in P2 looks interesting. Both of them will be battling for the overall win on nearly all the races. The Porsche vs Ferrari battle on GT2 seems to be taken up a notch with the off season development in the new 997 GT2 RSR. They finally seem to be able to compete with the Ferrari F430 GT.
