Microsoft recovers 'most, if not all' Sidekick customer data {Engadget Mobile}

Oct 16th 2009 4:21PM The outage started October 8th, and it's still not completely resolved for everyone, but the data restore is nearing completion. So yes, it was almost 2 weeks this thursday. They've finally fessed up to what exactly happened only on the 15th. Having most if not all data restored is a far cry from their previous announcement of: "We've likely lost all of your data." That's why most folks have been so perturbed with the situation, to say the least. I have no idea why they would have given up so easy. Maybe because everyone from Danger left or was laid off? Here's to better backup strategies ALL over the place. Including in your house! Reminder: BACKUP YOUR DATA NOW!

T-Mobile offers Sidekick users olive branch, $100 (update: not for everyone) {Engadget}

Oct 13th 2009 9:34AM The sidekick allowed use of their intellisync program which was similar to the old palm sync programs to download to Outlook. This enabled Contacts, Todo, Calendar, and that was all. This meant even if you were lucky enough to have synched your information before October 1st 2009, and could afford MS Office's Outlook you could have some of your data backed up. You also could have copied your device storage's photos to your SD card, which I did do, but it was never a published option and there was never an option to backup email ever. I have emails dating back to 2003 when I first signed up for the sidekick which was fortunate because some still have an unlimited $19.95 data plan! ;) My wife and I luckily haven't lost anything and I did sync what i could but other than this outage it was pretty pathetic to be offline for nearly a week. I also haven't recieved anything new to my phone in email since the October 1st. Right now it's a glorified cell phone with a keyboard for SMSing and browsing the web. Not only is the data not all restored, the catalog (read:app store back in the day) is all still offline, and the phone doesn't function as it should and hasn't for 2 weeks!

David Pogue launches all-out war on canned voicemail messages {Engadget Mobile}

Aug 4th 2009 2:01PM Denny that's not whole issue. This is more about when you place a call to someone else you get that, which forces everyone to use their 5 seconds of their monthly minutes to listen to this silly greeting that everyone including grandma knows how answering machines work. Leave a message after the beep.PERIOD none of the extra options. So during a connected call to your end point is wasting 5 seconds here and there, and maybe not a huge deal to one person, but rather multiplied over many calls, and then multiply that against the number of users on mobile networks results in a lot of profit from nickeled and dimed minutes off of your plan.
