Managed Copy hits Blu-ray Discs December 4th, but you still can't use it {Engadget HD}
Nov 7th 2009 11:38AM Managed copy would be pretty useless on the PS3 (as it is elsewhere) unless accompanied by transcoding ability. Even a 250Gb model would only store ~ 10 full size movies before it ran out of space. If it could transcode them down to 4Gb or less it might be more useful. Then again, it would likely take 3+ hours to do this, which would turn a lot of people off.
Maybe Sony would have a way to tie it to downloadable copies of movies, since I doubt the other options are practical.
SamyGo project aims to add new features to Samsung HDTVs {Engadget HD}
Oct 20th 2009 2:04PM The manual for my series 6 prints the GPL and LGPL at the end so I'm not surprised its running Linux underneath. Lots of set top boxes do too. Not sure I'd want to risk bricking an expensive TV though by installing dodgy firmware.
Fox dreaming of a future where Blu-ray movies load faster, are judged by the content of their character(s) {Engadget HD}
Oct 1st 2009 2:00PM If studios need a clue how to launch BDs (or DVDs), just look at The Dark Knight and you will learn all you need to know: Person inserts disc, movie plays. It's not hard is it?
Instead some studios seem DETERMINED to trip you up for minutes before grudgingly letting you play what you stuck the disk in for. Iron Man wants you to download some stupid BD-Live stuff, other apps throw up user agreements, Disney inflicts trailers. The sad part is none of this is necessary or desirable. It's only there because marketing idiots want to boost hits for the online store, or exaggerate metrics by inflicting mandatory actions on users.
If I want to watch some stupid trailers, put a link in the menus that point to them and let me choose. If I want to go online, put a link that leads to it. Forcing this shit on people just annoys them. In my case it annoys me enough that it affects my purchase decisions. Forcing people through some mandatory sales pitch in this day and age is just rude.
New Digital Copies on the actual Blu-ray Disc from Sony exclusively for the PSP {Engadget HD}
Sep 29th 2009 1:30PM I assume they stick a PSP copy on the BD simply as a convenience to PS3 owners.
PS3 3.0 / 3.01 firmware update making Blu-ray drive unusable? {Engadget HD}
Sep 26th 2009 3:27AM Works for me so far. I hear some reports that Drake's Fortune was bugged but that was apparantly fixed.
Toshiba's Cell TV still on for 2009 debut, now with Blu-ray {Engadget HD}
Sep 24th 2009 2:54AM Slide says "that will be marketed in 2009" making it sound like it will appear in 2010. With those specs it will definitely be a very expensive item. Hopefully it has the performance to match.
Disney releasing 14 classics on Blu-ray over the next 7 years {Engadget HD}
Sep 23rd 2009 3:04AM It's too bad Disney don't do something simple such removing the mandatory trailers. What's the point of lavishing attention on the movie if you piss people off even before its started? Stick the trailers at the end of the movie, or on the menu, or at least just play them once and store a flag on the player so they never automatically play again.
Disney releasing 14 classics on Blu-ray over the next 7 years {Engadget HD}
Sep 23rd 2009 2:56AM I doubt anything less than 20 years old even needs to be "restored". Unless Disney stores their masters in a builder's skip.
RealD figures designer glasses might help the acceptance of 3D {Engadget HD}
Sep 19th 2009 4:55AM Some people are against wearing 3D glasses because they think they will look stupid, will induce eyestrain or be uncomfortable to wear. And that they're an inconvenience, an additional expense, and symptomatic of the technical limitations of format.
I'll be very interested when 3D does turn up in consumer kit but I'll quite comfortable to wait for it to become a standard feature of televisions. I see no reason to pay a premium for it. I also hope that TV set manufactures define a single spec for active and passive glasses so they can be purchased separate to the TV.
picoStick USB Digital TV tuner is insanely small, but only in Europe {Engadget HD}
Sep 17th 2009 3:14AM I have an HVR-900 USB stick which is supposedly MPEG 2 only but can actually decode AVC by using dvbviewer. I expect these devices will handle anything shoved into the transport stream even if Hauppage's software does not. Most modern USB tuners do officially support AVC though.
