Apr 12th 2008 10:21AM I had to vote LPCM simply on the convenience. Streaming the already-converted audio gave me a much greater choice of receivers, which helped me save some money.

Mar 19th 2008 6:33PM A note to those considering using a Toshiba HD-DVD player as an upconverting DVD player: if you have a significant investment in non-anamorphic DVDs (such as many of the early Criterion discs), note that you CANNOT zoom those discs using the player. I have a Toshiba HD-A30, and while it does have a feature to zoom in while playing an HD-DVD, it will not zoom in on a standard DVD. Since most HDTVs don't allow aspect control for high-def sources, you must set your HD-DVD player's resolution to 480p or 480i, then zoom using your TV's aspect controls. The PS3 has this same problem. Even though I own the Toshiba, I still use an Oppo 970 for watching standard DVDs. The bootup time alone is worth using the Oppo over an HD-DVD player. It also plays PAL DVDs and can easily be changed to a region-free player via a remote code. And it's cheaper. And it plays DivX, XviD, SACD, and DVD-Audio. You get the point.

Dec 21st 2007 9:43PM I see no reason to "consolidate." LCDs, plasmas and RPTVs are perfectly compatible with each other, and each have their place in the market. I'd much rather see the HD-DVD/Blu-ray format war end than force everyone to buy an LCD.
