$249 Kindle 2.0 significantly thinner and Frog stylish? {Engadget}
Aug 26th 2008 10:41AM Certainly color would be an improvement for certain material, such as magazines, text book illustrations, etc. The problem is that currently color e-ink displays cost a fortune. Sadly I think it will be late 09 or more like 2010 before we see a color Kindle on the market.
New Kindle rumor revived, this time with a collegiate twist {Engadget}
Aug 25th 2008 3:09PM DrXym hit it on the head with his comments regarding standards for ebooks. Do we really want multiple competing DRM standards for ebooks similar to what we now have with the DRM on audio files?
Even though my friends have ridiculed me to no end for my interest in something like the Kindle, it is a really compelling idea, IF (and only if) they will move to a standard multi-device format and stop trying to emulate Apple with their approach.
I should be able to re-sell my Kindle books, back them up, or read them on a PC if I wish. Otherwise the price of the books has to be so dirt cheap that it makes it a virtual rental price for getting access to the content.

Aug 21st 2008 2:13PM Flash,
I don't know where the SSD discussion came from as I was refuting your comment about anybody who preferred HD DVD or thought it had a chance was a moron.
As far as solid state and downloads goes.
1. Call me when I can get a 50GB SSD drive for the 20 cents it costs to make a Blu-Ray disc.
2. Downloads are turds. The audio/video quality is crap and you don't even own the freaking movie. What a joke.
Blu-ray probably is the last physical format for AV we are going to see, but if studios and CEs want it to succeed in a sluggish economy they are going to have to get prices down, and fast.

Aug 21st 2008 1:37PM Bullshit comparisons to the iPhone that try to make everything else look like junk?
Say it isn't so!
Maybe instead of trying to make RIM look bad, Apple and their team of cheerleaders could explain why there are still so many serious bugs in the 3G.... not to mention why the 3G is still lacking basic features like Video, MMS, etc, which every $20 phone has these days.

TiVo quietly removes Series3 from its webstore {Engadget}
Jul 30th 2008 12:34PM McGroin,
Even though I love my TiVo, it's guys like you with your fuzzy math that cloud the issue of how much the TiVo costs to own vs. a cable company DVR.
In addition to the 3 year contract on my TiVo for service ($299) and the TiVo hardware ($299) I also have to pay charges for my cable cards and 2nd outlet fees for HD programming (which I wouldn't pay with the cable company DVR) of an additional $16 per month.
Monthly cost of the TiVo for 3 years - $32.
Monthly cost of CC DVR for 3 years - $16.
If you want to sell people on TiVo then tell them about the product benefits, not cost savings. Better yet, convince TiVo to reduce subscription charges to a more palatable $5-$10 per month with a 2nd unit fee of $2.
HP responds to MediaSmart Server issues, offers no real solution at all {Engadget}
Jul 30th 2008 12:57AM I really like the Windows Home Server OS. Especially better that I built my own rig for less than what the HP solution cost.
As an added bonus it's 2X as fast has 2GB of RAM and consumes less power than the HP POS.
Two new Kindle models on the horizon? {Engadget}
Jul 16th 2008 11:03AM It's the integrated EVDO access that has made the Kindle such a success. You can take it with you on vacation and get access to plenty of new material (books, magazines, blogs, newspapers, etc) without the need to bring a laptop along to feed it material.
Integrated EVDO is probably the biggest single strength of this device over cheaper comparable e-readers.
iTunes activation servers go down, iPhone 3G customers being sent home unactivated, first-gen iPhone customers stuck with dead iPhones {Engadget}
Jul 11th 2008 1:18PM This is inexcusable on Apple's part. If MS screwed up this way we would be inundated with calls for Bill Gates head on a plate, yet people make excuse after excuse when Apple messes up this badly.
Drobo (second-gen) mini-review {Engadget}
Jul 10th 2008 1:36AM The drobo with its $500 price tag is definitely playing in NAS territory and I think a lot of people are rather amazed that the new version simply didn't integrate the Drobo Share functionality so that you can buy a single device and connect it ANYWHERE on your network.
The 1st generation of Drobo was lucky to see 30mbps read/write speeds so it is unlikely that the USB port is the limitation on speed of the Drobo. Drobo speed limitations are around the disk technology being utilized, use of software raid (CPU dependant) etc.
