How would you change Popcorn Hour's A-100 HD media streamer? {Engadget}

Jul 14th 2008 10:00AM I'd purchase one if it had HDMI 1.3 so it could pass 7.1 channelHD Audio.

Linksys announces WRT610N simultaneous dual-N band router {Engadget}

Jul 3rd 2008 4:33AM Yes, 802.11n already supports simultaneous 2.4 and 5 GHz, but most router hardware doesn't. Most routers contain only a 2.4 GHz radio.

The Linksys WRT600N has been out for several months now and has support for using both frequencies simultaneously. It also support 40 MHz wide channels (as opposed to the standard 20 MHz), which produces another speed increase. The WRT600N has 3 external antennas, so it doesn't look as nice as the WRT610N, but my guess is that the 600N has slightly better coverage.

These routers use Broadcom chipsets. DD-WRT will run on the WRT600N (and probably the WRT610N as well), but it is currently lacking a couple of features (such as 40 MHz wide channel support.)

Managed Copy to be sorely absent from finalized AACS specifications? {Engadget HD}

Apr 22nd 2008 1:29PM If the big media companies don't give users Managed Copy, then the users will just use Unmanaged Copy (a.k.a. ripped or pirated copies.) Media companies need to realize that it is their customer they need please. By not allowing legitimate, managed copies, they're encouraging users to look to pirated copies.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a strong believer in paying for movies and then backing-them up to a media server (using Slysoft AnyDVD HD.) But I know many people find it easier to download a free copy rather than purchase/decrypt/rip a legitimate copy. This omission is a bad deal for everyone, both producer and consumer.

WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray finally supports TrueHD and DTS-HD {Engadget HD}

Mar 18th 2008 10:08AM Too bad there is no PC hardware that can output TrueHD or DTS-HD over a digital connection. The only only way to do it is over HDMI, and all of the current HDMI solutions only output 5.1 PCM. Hopefully there will soon be a high-bandwidth HDMI audio interface to take advantage of this.

JVC's DLA HD100 1080p D-ILA projector gets reviewed {Engadget HD}

Mar 17th 2008 12:55PM The reason not to get the Sony/Epson/Sanyo: Native contrast ratio. Both use a dynamic iris and, even so, do not come anywhere close to 30,000:1 contrast ratio of JVC.

Also, the JVC uses the Gennum GF9351 VXP Image Processor, which is much better than the processor/deinterlacer in the lower-priced products.

JVC's DLA HD100 1080p D-ILA projector gets reviewed {Engadget HD}

Mar 17th 2008 12:51PM Quoting the Cnet article:

"Finally, a DLA-HD10032 control port is on tap for touch panel remote control programming purposes."

What is a DLA-HD10032 port? Could it be an RS232 port? Yes, it is. The author of the article obviously originally wrote the review for the RS2 version of this projector, then performed a find-and-replace of "RS2" with "DLA-HD100". How can you write an article and not even know which model of projector you are testing? Granted, the two models are identical, but this is just sloppy.

Here is Greg Rodgers final opinion of the JVC DLA-RS2 projector. I suggest purchasing the latest copy of WSR for a thorough and useful review:

Quoting Greg Rogers: "The JVC DLA-RS2U three-panel 1080p D-ILA projector is a remarkable achievement in front-projection technology. It delivered a native full-field contrast ratio over 30,000:1, which had previously seemed unobtainable for a lamp-based projector. Its outstanding black level and dynamic range, coupled with a higher gamma, provides a viewing experience that had previously only been possible with a fine CRT projector. It produces vividly colorful images, but video perfectionists will want to use an external color-management system for optimal colorimetry. Even with that addition, the JVC DLARS2U ($7,995 [MSRP]) is an exceptional value for a superlative home theatre experience."

JVC's DLA HD100 1080p D-ILA projector gets reviewed {Engadget HD}

Mar 17th 2008 9:47AM Another worthless Cnet review. For an extremely thorough, detailed review of this projector, check out Greg Rodgers "JVC DLA-RS2U 1080p D-ILA Front Projector Review" in the latest edition of Widescreen Review. Subscribers can download the article now from their website: http://www.widescreenreview.com/

In short, the DLA-RS2U (which is identical to the DLA HD100) is one of the best projectors he's seen and there were no complaints about color accuracy. A measured, native contrast ratio of 30,900:1 when fully calibrated and without the use of an dynamic iris -- nothing else comes close. This is the best digital projector available today and is in a completely different league from any current LDC or even DLP front projector.

Every reviewer should take the time to calibrate a projector before reviewing it. There is no way to accurately compare it to other projectors unless all are calibrated to the same reference level (i.e. gray scale D65.) If the projector doesn't provide the ability to calibrate properly, now that is something to complain about.

Marantz's 6-in / 2-out VS3002 HDMI 1.3a switcher now shipping {Engadget HD}

Mar 13th 2008 9:05AM The big question is: can the two outputs be controlled independent of one another or do they always display the same content? My guess is the later. Let me know where there is a switch capable of independent (matrixed) HDMI output.

Ask Engadget HD: Is now the time to replace my 720p HDTV with a 1080p set? {Engadget HD}

Mar 6th 2008 9:36AM Here is a chart showing when you get the resolution benefit for a specific screen size/viewing distance: http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/

Ask Engadget HD: Is now the time to replace my 720p HDTV with a 1080p set? {Engadget HD}

Mar 6th 2008 9:33AM If you have a small screen and sit far away, 720p is fine. If you have a huge screen and sit very close, the upgrade would be worthwhile. Here is a chart showing when you get the resolution benefit for a specific screen size/viewing distance.
