Nintendo searching for more Wii manufacturers {Joystiq Nintendo}

Mar 30th 2007 9:19PM I think it will be a minimum of one month and probably more like two months before you'll notice any effect of this.

Here is my idea of what happened:

Prior to launch Nintendo knew there was a lot of buzz about the Wii and anticipated a high demand. The launch came and went followed by Christmas and the Wii pretty much sold out. Nintendo probably patted themselves on the back for a great launch and for meeting the high demand and expected demand to taper off significantly. Their stocks were pretty much depleted but the slowdown would give them time to replenish.

Only come the end of January and the demand hadn't waned. In fact it was about the same as a monthe earlier.

Nintendo had a decision to make. They could spend vast amounts of capital aquiring more manufacturing capabilites to meet the still-strong demand but eventually demand had to slow and then the added manufacturing costs incurred to meet the demand might exceed the additional revenue. Or they could push as much production out of the existing channels for long enough to meet the strong demand before it tapered off.

Well, they chose the latter and here it is almost April and the demand seems just as high. It is only now that they are adding additional manufacturing plants and I'll bet they are kicking themselves for not doing this 2 or 3 months ago.

I don't think they anticipated the strong and steady demand for the Wii and it may have cost them. But I don't know if you can really blame them. They were in uncharted waters and nobody knew what to expect. Plus when you add in the Gamecube's performance I don't know if you could blame Nintendo for the miscalculation.

Tretton: PS3 will be "difficult to cost reduce" {Joystiq}

Jan 23rd 2007 3:44PM I've posted this before but I would not buy a PS3 for any amount of money right now. And I mean that sincerely. I would not pay $5 for it. I do not want or need it. There are zero games out right now that interest me. There are zero games in the near future that interest me enought to buy it. This may change when and if games such as MGS4 come out, assuming it stays exclusive. But even then one or two must have games would not entice me enough to buy it even for $150. As far as Bluray goes, I couln't care less. Let me say that again: I don't care about Bluray period.

As for HD, I don't care much about it as far as games go, beyond 720p.720p is pretty good looking. This whole Sony 1080p thing is a bunch of marketing hype. Does anyone care to guess what the market penetration is for 1080p sets? I don't know the stats but the HD TV penetration is only at 17% or so in the US. What percentage of that would you care to guess is 1080p ready. My guess would be maybe 25% of that 17% can run 1080p content(and I think that is being generous). That is only about 4% of the TV market. Now what percentage of that 4% is ready and willing to get a PS3? I don't know. It's probably a disproportionately large number but let's just say it is as much as 90% that means only about 3% of the TV owning public in the us can benefit from 1080p. Nielson Media Research states that for 2005 there are approx.109 million housholds in the US with TVs. 3% of that is about 3.25 million housholds. That is not a mainstream audience by any stretch and what it illustrates is Sony's complete lack of understanding of the market.

Sony thought they could do no wrong and that eager gamers would leap at the chance to work two jobs in order buy a PS3 so they could be honored that Sony would be generous enough to allow them to purchase a PS3. Well they were dead wrong. Most people who bought the PS2 and who supported the software on it didn't do it out of some sort of respect and obligation to Sony. They did it because it was cheap and had a vast library full of good games(and a ton of crap games-but you have to take the good with the bad).

Few fans are as hardcore and dedicated as Apple fans so most companies have to give customers what they want/need/are able to use, at a good price. The PS3 offers BluRay which most don't need, want or are able to use. It gives them 1080p which most don't need, want or are able to use (not to mention-will they even deliver 1080p games in large numbers?). It gives them an experience that is virtually indistinguishable from the Xbox 360. It gives them nothing that the Wii does in terms of control (don't bring up six-axis, it doesn't even compete).What all this means is that the PS3 is about 5 years too early.

Wii: the most "violent" console of them all? {Joystiq}

Jan 11th 2007 7:35PM Is it just me, or do those graphics look worse that Red Steel and Farcry? Why are there so many games not even reaching the Xbox's potential?

Analyst: In-stock PS3s are "troubling" {Joystiq}

Jan 11th 2007 7:23PM Half the people posting here seem to be ignoramuses.

First of all, how is it biased for Joystiq to report what an analyst says?

Secondly, I agree with those that say the PS3 would sell like hotcakes if they set the price at the right point. While I would not currently buy the PS3 at any price (I wouldn't use the BluRay and there are zero games I'm interested in), many folks, less picky than me or BluRay freaks, would snap them up. What is the right price point? I don't know but at a minimum they should meet the 360's prices of $299 & $399. Even at those prices I still think the 360 is a better value.

Thirdly, someone already mentioned this but when Sony comes knockin' on the retailer's door and wants to know what their next order will be the Best Buys and Walmarts are gonna say not now cause they're sitting on inventory that they can't move. As this continues the developers are going to get pretty worried and some may scale back, cross develop or outright cancel projects which will in turn fuel the negative sentiment of gamers toward the PS3, which will lead to more less sales, less games etc.

I think that if sales don't pick up the above scenario may play out and the best way to combat it is to slash prices and move stock to build a base that the developers can support. You might say it's crazy for Sony to slash prices when they're already taking a loss on every unit, but if they lose software support they're dead anyway. Losing their shirt on the hardware would at least let them keep their pants.
