Cablevision asks FCC for a waiver to encrypt all Clear QAM channels {Engadget HD}

Sep 24th 2009 10:11AM "But it seems to us that Cablevision is going to have a hard time arguing to protect these channels in the clear, when it's the every same channels you can get for free with an antenna."

Alas, in the Bronx (where I live) Cablevision was encrypting all analog channels when analog TV was broadcasting. I don't have high hopes that the waiver will be denied. As far as I know Cablevision is already encrypting basic QAM since I haven't been able to get anything but a channel here or there. Cablevision's tactics in the Bronx are particularly disgusting since many of us cannot get satellite-- there is no alternative. In areas where satellite penetration is stronger (Long Island, Rockland), many of the analog channels remain unencrypted. Cablevision argues that the Bronx and Brooklyn are full of thieves. I don't buy it. In the worst case people would "stealing" channels that you can get over the air free.

The CEA asks the FCC if CableCARD is helping to spur competition {Engadget HD}

Sep 22nd 2009 3:42PM I've read about how clear QAM is mandated. That's nice-- all I know is that I don't get clear QAM in my area. I didn't / don't get unencrypted analog basic either. The problem is that there are so many exceptions to the rules that they almost don't matter. I'd rather have the FCC enforce the existing rules rather than make up something new. CableCard works pretty well-- let's just make it easier for consumers to get.

Ask Engadget HD: What's the best on the go HD camcorder? {Engadget HD}

Aug 7th 2009 11:44PM I bought a Samsung sl820. I considered the dedicated camcorders but to me it makes a lot more sense to spend a little more to get a good camera and optical zoom and stabalization. You could also consider the Canon 780.

Aug 5th 2009 9:42AM I love this game. It's a lot like Advanced Wars for those who have never played (or maybe Advanced Wars is a lot like it). I ended up buying it for my phone and would love to see it updated.

I would personally prefer to see this game on a DS as I don't see much benefit to playing on a big screen.

Engadget HD Podcast 147 - 07.22.2009 {Engadget HD}

Jul 27th 2009 9:38PM There is something wrong with the podcast in the zune feed. It only shows up as 10 minutes. I had to manually add it. I guess that serves me right for using a zune.
