HD DVD not "future-proof" enough {Engadget HD}

May 18th 2006 5:01PM Couple things:

HD-DVD dual layer is 30GB
Blu-ray single layer is 25GB

Since intial Blu-ray discs are slated to be single layer only, HD-DVD does have an initial advantage although Sony will (assumedly) overtake them. However, virtually all HD-DVDs are (and will be) encoded in VC-1 which many feel is a superior codec as compared to MPEG-2. Additionally, VC-1 takes up less space per a given bitrate over MPEG-2. On the thread in question over at AVS, the guy complaining about HD-DVDs lack of size was using MPEG-2 for video. I don't have a horse in this race but 30 GB is plenty of space for most applications.

HDTV Antennas: do they exist? {Engadget HD}

Dec 21st 2005 9:19PM "Here in Cincinnati we have a station broadcasting right now on Channel 10, which is very clearly a VHF station."

Just because you may tune in Channel 10.1 (for example), that does not necessarily mean it's actually broadcasting on channel 10.1...it could actually be broadcasting on a UHF channel. Having said that, there are most definately VHF HD signals being broadcast today. In fact, around 10% off HD channels are in VHF according to http://www.solidsignal.com/antennas/antenna_faqs.asp.
