Top ten rationales for illegally downloading HDTV shows {Engadget HD}

Jun 30th 2009 10:05PM Why? Because I am Canadian!

Seriously, it's legal up here so there's no reason for an excuse. No DMCA, no individual lawsuits, although this may change if the current government has their way.

Microsoft offering Silver members one month of Xbox Live Gold for $1 {Joystiq}

Jun 18th 2009 11:07AM Even at $12 per year, it still would be too much. I've lived just fine with my silver account for the past three years, and my PS3 lets me play online for free.

0$ is the only amount I'm willing to pay for a game service.

Xbox Live gets 1080p Zune video store, Netflix browsing, Twitter and Facebook integration {Engadget HD}

HP MediaSmart LX195 boasts 640GB HDD, 1.6GHz Atom, $400 MSRP {Engadget HD}

Apr 30th 2009 12:15PM I'm sorry, i just built a HTPC for around $500 with more functionality. Why would anyone actually pay this much for a media server, when a low end PC could be built for less. The only reason why my HTPC cost more was because I wanted some additional features that drove the price up (4GB RAM, 2X1TB HDD)

My Bloody Valentine 3D grosses way more in 3D than 2D {Engadget HD}

Jan 25th 2009 5:28PM OK, even when compared to other slasher flicks, this movie was pretty bad. However, the 3D effects were really well done. There were a few obvious shots where they were trying to showcase the tech, but even the regular scenes showed quite a bit of promise. The only problem that I could see is that the objects outside of the plane of focus were almost headache inducing. It was like an object being out of focus twice.

Microsoft extends Windows XP deliveries to May 30, 2009 {Engadget}

The reply got cut off, here's the rest:

We might spend $750,000+ on a DNA sequencer and gripe about it all the time, but the company is going to sell less than 1000 of these units in total...worldwide. The company would have to provide hardware and software support for two versions of the product, it simply doesn't make sense. The numbers (and demand) for a Mac variant simply isn't there.

First to address your points

1 and 2. No issues here.

3. I've made major system modifications and never had to contact Microsoft, but this may be because I'm using an institutionally licenced copy of XP (and now Vista). I don't know if the hardware locks are disabled in this configuration.

4. I view it as market pressure. Is it worth the time and money to adapt a program for a Mac OS, when it represents only a fraction of the PC market? It all comes down to money.

On the specific topic of there being no Mac software, it's a bit more complicated than that. I'm in a very specalized field (Molecular Biology) and all the equipment is low volume, and in fact is normally sold with the computer as part of the package (Windows or rarely Linux). Part of the reason for this is that many of the devices need specalized boards, or hardware elements that are simply not supported by Apple. On the business side of things, there is the simple fact that the VAST majority of University computers are Windows based, and the cost to provide a Mac-based alternative is not financially viable. Keep in mind that these are high cost/low volume products here. We might spend $750,000+ on a DNA sequencer and gripe about it all the time, but the company is going to sell
