Pioneer shows off 16-layer 400GB Blu-ray Disc, affirms compatibility with current players {Engadget}

Dec 2nd 2008 3:27PM Man, how many times does this have to be hammered into people's heads?

It's a DATA disc, NOT a BD designed for movies.

Like, you know, 400gb to 1TB backups... Data.

First wave of Criterion Blu-ray Discs to tout plain packaging, ship December 19th {Engadget HD}

Nov 26th 2008 4:58PM I sometimes wonder if the Internet was only designed for whining about things people do *wrong*.

Criterion makes the VERY BEST DVDs money can buy. It's absolutely AWESOME that they've gone Blu, and are releasing some great titles. I have The Third Man DVD, and will consider replacing it. Their Wes Anderson releases are especially enjoyable (Rushmore had GREAT features), and I can't wait to see what Bottlerocket has to offer.

In terms of content -- and their commitment to producing high-quality transfers -- Criterion can't be beat, and I'm betting that carries over to their Blu-rays. After how totally awesome Criterion is, the complaint (whining!) about packaging really just becomes a sad statement about the poster, rather than on Criterion itself.

Discuss: Would You Support a Gay Superhero? {Cinematical}

Nov 13th 2008 10:20PM My answer is simple.

No, I wouldn't mind, as long as it's in the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang sense of a gay superhero.

I am not interested in being told how wonderful it is to be gay. I'm not interested in being told how terrible it is to be gay. If the superhero is gay as part of their character -- like Val Kilmer's in KKBB -- that's fine and uh... dandy. :D

Kilmer was gay. But he was funny, smart, tough, angry, caring... in short, HUMAN. He was not an agenda. He was a character.

Gay people are real, living, breathing human beings. This is something Christianity has a hard time *publicly* recognizing. And in terms of art, we need to. By not doing so, Christians miss one of THE MOST CHRIST-LIKE MOMENT IN MODERN CINEMA. The visit to the parents house in Brokeback Mountain. THOSE were true Christians... and that holds true even if you're a Christian that believes homosexuality is a sin.

Uh I think I'm on a tangent, I'll stop... :-)

Sneak Peek: 'WALL-E' on Blu-ray and DVD {Cinematical}

Nov 13th 2008 9:43PM Great to see you guys finally recognizing the strength of Blu-ray.

When I saw Wall-E in the theater, it was so beautiful, I said to my wife that we would HAVE to get it on Blu-ray. I pre-ordered it the day it was announced.

Another stellar recommendation is Sleeping Beauty. My favorite animated film of all time, primarily for the *art* of the film. The Blu-ray is absolutely astounding. Like owning a work of fine art, something the DVD just couldn't quite pull off.

Hope to see more mention of Blu-ray in the future. High Definition is truly the best way to see films in your home, and it can often beat out the quality of the theatrical presentation.

Singulus CEO predicts Blu-ray machine delivery peak in 5 to 6 years {Engadget HD}

Nov 10th 2008 7:18PM Because of the upswing in HDTV purchases. And before we get more "DVD is good enough BS," cite an actual study that says that, mkay? mkay! And the best time to grab a BD player is when you grab a new HDTV... it's just a natural time to purchase, the salesman will push it, AND it gives you a better chance at talking a deal.

The analog spectrum goes south next year, and that will motivate many people to purchase HDTVs. I know several that are just waiting for that as an excuse. Of course, the economy is going to be a major factor, but already it's basically impossible to buy a decent-sized SDTV any more.

Cinematical Seven: Michael Crichton Movies {Cinematical}

Nov 7th 2008 12:22PM I said "implied" the end of the world.

The dinosaurs have escaped the island, and after such a big deal being made of isolating them to protect the world's ecosystem and whatnot, we see what a disaster this is. Indeed, after the slaughter that occurred on the Island, we see what a disaster this is.

The book ends with hints of them spreading, and only beginning to cause havoc. The *implication* is that this is, as I said, only the beginning of a wider problem that will lead to the destruction of the world's current ecosystem, and possibly mankind with it.

Yeah, I read the book... and understood it too. Sheesh.

Cinematical Seven: Characters Who Should Never Be 'Role Models' {Cinematical}

Nov 7th 2008 5:56AM No "Alex" from A Clockwork Orange? There's a gaffe if there ever was one!!

Here's a guy who is actually *trying* to be something of a role model (or inspiration, or... something!) to his fellow droogs. And let's face, it really doesn't get any worse than this as role models go.
