Google Navigation video hands-on: you want this {Engadget}
Oct 28th 2009 5:56PM Am I the only one who thinks that the way the map scrolls is really irritating and distracting? Garmin GPSes calculate your current speed, and they "assume" that you'll continue going more or less at that same speed, so they smoothly animate and then correct if you do something they didn't expect. It screws up sometimes, like if you lose reception and stop, but generally it works to give you a smoother presentation of the map's motion. I hope Google will do something similar for this app, because in all other ways, it looks to completely kick ass.
One caveat: recently I traveled to Canada on a business trip. I thought, just before I left, "I should drop the Nüvi in the bag", but then I figured I wouldn't be driving (my co-worker was), and I had the iPhone in case I needed it. I forgot about the roaming data issue with Canada, so of course I couldn't use the GPS feature of the phone without paying a huge amount of money.
Until the "cloud" is ubiquitous and reasonably-priced everywhere on Earth, there's still a place for navigation units with on-board maps. Of course, an Android phone with an SD slot might be able to work with locally-cached maps, if Google would support it.
Paul Sr. demonstrates OCC's electric chopper, Fox News seems mystified {Engadget}
Aug 17th 2009 5:54PM Wait, you're looking for logic among "Fox & Friends"? Seriously? Do you not watch the Daily Show?
MacBook Pros with 7200RPM HDDs getting a touch too noisy? {Engadget}
Jul 12th 2009 1:34PM I've had this problem with my 17" MacBook Pro configure-to-order machine.
The drive made a clicking noise, followed by a "chirp" or "beep", and then another click. This would sometimes happen several times in a row.
Apart from the obvious annoyance (the sound was audible from 50 feet away!), whenever the noise happens, access to the drive also stalls momentarily. Playing video? Hiccup. Slideshow? Hiccup. Capturing video? Well, I never did that, but I'd predict dropped frames.
Anyway, I had the drive replaced at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store where I bought it, and the new drive has been quiet (knock wood). The 7200 definitely is louder and has greater vibration than a 5400, but this click/chirp noise is not normal.
Video: Better Place's automated electric vehicle battery switch station is faster than Melvin Dummar {Engadget}
May 13th 2009 10:36AM Very slick. I think Better Place has a really interesting approach to the issues of EV battery cost and recharging time. I live in the SF Bay Area, so some of these stations should be showing up around here. It will be really interesting to see how it goes. I've driven all-electric vehicles (an EV-1 and now a RAV4-EV) for the last 9 years, and they've been great. If this prompts wider adoption and use, I think it would be fantastic.

Amazon Kindle DX first hands-on (with video!) {Engadget}
May 6th 2009 2:42PM I'm really bummed that they took the page turn buttons off of the left side. On my Kindle 1 and Kindle 2, I've always held the book in my left hand and turned the pages with my thumb. Easy. Especially if I'm reading a book while I'm catching lunch at a restaurant. I'm right-handed, so I use my right for the fork, and hold the book in my left hand. I wonder if it works upside down.
Engadget's recession antidote: win a Sonos Multi-Room Music System Bundle 150 {Engadget}
Apr 29th 2009 12:44PM I think Sonos makes a great product, and I'd be happy to have this set!
Chrysler aims to produce all-electric USPS pimpmobiles... er, minivans {Engadget}
Apr 27th 2009 11:42AM Years ago, Chrysler had an electric minivan called the EPIC. There were a number of them in service as LAX shuttles, because they featured fast-charge capability that allowed them to rapidly juice up while waiting to be dispatched. I wonder if this is anything other than a rehash of that vehicle.
Aliph Jawbone Prime hands-on and unboxing {Engadget}
Apr 23rd 2009 3:04PM I wonder if the new earbuds can be used with the Jawbone 2. That @#%(@$#@ thing won't stay in my ear.
Plantronics Voyager PRO gets purchased, unboxed early {Engadget}
Apr 20th 2009 2:55PM My last Plantronics was great except for wind noise and ambient noise. My Jawbone 2 is great at those, but won't stay in my @#%& ear. Perhaps this one will be the best of both.
