Nikon's D90: the DSLR for HD junkies? {Engadget HD}

Sep 8th 2008 9:40AM The biggest problem isn't the motion JPEG, but the audio -- a crappy mono mic and no input jack just won't cut it. Nor will the 5-minute clip limit.

The image quality is astounding -- you simply cannot get that shallow depth of field with a $1000 video camera.

You could probably make a decent short film with a D90 if you recorded the audio externally and sync'd it up in post -- but it won't replace a camcorder just yet.

The D90 is a good start -- a shot across Canon's bow showing that the old market segment lines aren't going to stand for long.

The list of what they need to fix to make it a true HD camcorder competitor is pretty short:

- 5 minute clip limit
- 24p frame rate
- Mono audio

The first one is a firmware fix. The second is probably a sensor limitation, but going from 720/24p to 1080i/60 shouldn't be rocket science for the next generation. The third could be fixed with a grip-style add on that includes a stereo shotgun mic and external jack.

Verdict: A good v1 experiment, and inches away from changing the market for good.

Five possibilities for the final Cylon {TV Squad}

May 9th 2008 9:02PM I'll add a long shot: Derek, the sick boy Baltar prayed over in the season 4 opener. There was a whole lot of attention paid to him for a character we won't see again.

I also like Doc Cottle as a possibility. Gaeta is marked for death, and bringing back Billy would almost be cheating, since he clearly was supposed to be a Cyclon and got replaced by Tory.

If it's Starbuck, I'll give up on the series right then and there, delete the episode off my DVR before it ends, and never watch an episode of Caprica.

Mike Rosenblum has a good anecdote here, and Mindy McAdams bought them for her students.

Oh, and Wired loves it too.

What it takes to produce an HD newscast {Engadget HD}

Aug 30th 2007 12:31PM A note on terminology: The Technical Director (or TD) is the one who pushes buttons on the switcher during the newscast. At some stations (not sure if WFTS is among them), a Director is also present, generally just talking and not pushing buttons. The Producer is responsible for news content, communicating with the anchors in the studio and reporters in the field, ensuring the show finishes on time.
