Apple's new strategy for hiring retail employees {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jun 6th 2008 11:33PM I would say most of the time I go to an Apple Store, the people who work there are pretty arrogant and irritating. I think when the stores first opened, they actually got old school Mac people who really knew what they were talking about, but after a few years, they left for better jobs, and now all we have are smart asses who think that just because they have used a Mac for a few years (if that) and work at the Apple Store, they know everything.
Apple's hubris as a company is trickling down to the stores and they would get called on a bit more often. Sure, there are a few people at the stores who are genuinely helpful and cool, but really, most of the time they just seem to be more interested in hanging out with other employees than helping you out or are just too cool to deign to talk with you. I think Apple needs to inject some humility into their culture--it was hubris that brought them to their knees in the 90s, and the way the economy is now, with people not making as much and perhaps not able to afford to join the Apple tribe these days...well, I just think they should watch out.
If you are wondering, the store that I have encountered the most arrogance have been The Grove store in LA. Man, there are so many jerks there...
If you do want to work there, just remember that not everyone is an expert at the Mac and that just because people have questions does not mean they are idiots.
First in line for the keynote {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Jan 15th 2008 2:54AM uhm...it's cold out there, regardless of where you are from...it's a WET cold in SF and I cannot BELIEVE people are camping out for the keynote. I've been to a few and, well, it's cool and all, but it's not THAT cool. Good luck guys, at least you will get a seat.
but to pay that much for keynote and get pneumonia?
sigh, maybe I am just jaded.
10 reasons why HD DVD or Blu-ray is here to stay {Engadget HD}
Dec 4th 2007 8:05PM Michael Bay's comment on this is kinda interesting:

"What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth."
Carmack fighting with Jobs about gaming on the Mac {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 22nd 2007 1:57AM You know, I used to lobby for Mac games for years. I was a huge fan of Myth, Marathon, Diablo II, heck, I loved Ancient Art of War. Remember when being a Mac person involved a fair amount of defensiveness? I mean, Macs are hip, Macs are cool now, but it certainly wasn't the case for much of the 90s. The only people MORE defensive were Mac gamers--we were always writing letters to get more games on the Mac and were often stymied (remember Half Life??)..
I must admit, I have given up on games on the Mac. I have an Xbox 360 and it's a fantastic gaming platform. I love it. The only time that I started playing games on the Mac was when World of Warcraft came out, but after awhile, I just got bored and then...nothing.
I think it's sad, really--Mac games have had a history of being innovative an high quality (Halo?) but it's totally true: Steve dislikes games just about as much as he hates TV (I totally think the iMac should have a TV tuner or some way of getting a cable signal but that's just me, perhaps).
I think the gaming market has a lot of potential, but I think Apple's really focusing on getting as many people as possible hooked on iPods and iPhones (which will hopefully drive people to the Mac platform) right now. Games, other than kids games, are seemingly just gonna continue to be a lower priority...I mean, look at how woefully underpowered Apple's graphics cards tend to be--if they were serious about gaming, they would either deliver higher power cards or let iMac users upgrade their video cards...
anyway, good thread. happy thanksgiving.
and if you're on Xbox Live, I'm zensen...
