Poll: What's the best HTPC Blu-ray software? {Engadget HD}
Jun 28th 2008 3:40AM I voted for PowerDVD Ultra (actually, I still use 7.3 Ultra, because I have no money to upgrade to 8 Ultra), but I have a comment. PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra doesn't allow me to take snapshots from BD (the Capture button is replaced with the Popup Menu button when playing BD, and the Capture hotkey, "C", is disabled too). If PowerDVD 8 Ultra keeps that same no-snappies limitation, then I'm not upgrading.
Sony unloads two new VGX-TP1 media center PCs {Engadget HD}
Jun 28th 2008 3:32AM Sorry, not interested - unless Sony adds SACD playback support to its BD drive. It's not fair that the PS3 can enjoy BD+SACD but not its own computers!?!? SONY VAIO SUCKS!
The Bill Day giveaway (part 2) - Office Ultimate 2007 {Engadget}
Jun 28th 2008 3:12AM Disregard this one, what happened is that when posting my first comment, it didn't show up so I thought it didn't successfully posted so I posted this second one, only to see that my first comment now showed up. Ludicrous engadget delay.

Jun 28th 2008 3:09AM Windows XP Professional x64 Edition - the only non-server Windows OS that never crashes.
(Well, it never crashed on my computer, not for the one full year I used it before I permanently switched to Vista Ultimate 64-bit, which has crashed upon my face forty times. Nah, make it fifty.)

Jun 28th 2008 3:04AM Windows XP Professional x64 Edition - the ONLY non-server Windows OS that never crashes.
(Well, it never crashed on my computer for one full year, until I replaced it with Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit which crashed in front of my face about forty times or so. Nah, make it fifty. At least Vista Service Pack 1 has prevented further crashes so far.)
Japanese researchers devise method for cramming 42GB on a DVD {Engadget}
Jun 28th 2008 2:56AM Maybe not a waste of research resources. What if they make such "V-DVD" player backwards-compatible with DVDs and CDs? Initially it was thought that BD players wouldn't be backwards-compatible with DVDs or CDs, but then all BD players we've seen so far ARE backwards-compatible, even the PS3 (which also does SACD but not DVD-Audio).
Intempo Rebel records songs from FM radio, freaks out RIAA {Engadget}
Jun 20th 2008 6:59PM Why would I want to record from radio? Even FM Stereo can't completely replicate full audio spectrum, and its SNR is distressing too. I'll stick to buying vanilla COMPACT DISCS - they can replicate more than full audio spectrum (up to 22.05 kHz which is half Nyquist sampling rate of 44.1 kHz) and they have better SNR.
NEC kicks out 26-inch EA261WM LCD monitor with WUXGA resolution {Engadget}
Jun 19th 2008 7:51PM My rhetoric isn't incoherent. Dells are so far the best displays I've ever seen for the price tag. That's why almost all non-Mac-fanboy schools use Dell displays. Plus you get side USB ports and memory-card readers; does NEC provide them?
BTW, DVI-I is digital not analog. And every techie/nerd knows that only DVI-I allows HDCP, DVI-D doesn't. That's why there aren't HDMI-to-DVI-D adapters nor vice-versa; only HDMI-to-DVI-I and vice-versa.
NEC kicks out 26-inch EA261WM LCD monitor with WUXGA resolution {Engadget}
Jun 19th 2008 7:48PM YES MORON. Dells can pivot to portrait, unless you'ven't found yet that hidden button behind the stand to stretch the display up so it can later pivot clockwise. Unless you're turning it counterclockwise which is the wrong way.
Dell's new UltraSharp 2709W 27-inch LCD {Engadget}
Jun 19th 2008 6:28PM If the price drops enough, I'll fetch it to replace my non-HDCP 2405FPW. Finally, no more need for AnyDVD HD to bypass HDCP for my DVI input!
