DirecTV DVR software update hits the stage again, now with slightly less fail {Engadget HD}
Oct 21st 2008 10:59PM No update, but I still came home to an unresponsive HR21-700 (still playing live TV, mind you) and had to reboot. Missed House and the first few minutes of Fringe as a result. HD-PVR here I come!!!!

Sep 23rd 2008 12:51PM Am I the only one who first read the name as "mediocre"? I'm guessing it's anything but mediocre, but still... what were they thinking? LOL!
DirecTV On Demand now available across the country {Engadget HD}
Jun 30th 2008 2:58PM Sorry... need to correct my "311" number above. That consists of ONLY the movie listings. There are quite a bit more (2804 in all) when you include all categories.
DirecTV On Demand now available across the country {Engadget HD}
Jun 30th 2008 2:53PM Out of beta, but still--to quote DirecTV--"slim pickins" in the HD arena. 14 programs in HD, consisting of only 6 free ones, which include 4 Snoop Dogg music videos, 1 Pussycat Dolls concert "clip" and 1 Christina Aguilera concert. Everything else is apparently "new" and costs $4.99.
SD, you do have a decent amount of choices (311 currently listed on their website), but there's still a large portion (104) that cost between $1.99 and $4.99. That leaves 207 which are free.
But, my little complaining aside, I have high hopes that it'll get better and I'm looking forward to more HD content.
Satellite customers more satisfied than cable customers? {Engadget HD}
Jun 27th 2008 1:26PM Left cable back in the 90's as well. They seem to have stayed there!
DirecTV's DVR may not be Tivo, but it's a valiant effort. My Tivo's had lots of bugs when I first got them, too. People seem to forget that nowadays. I'd urge people to give their HD DVR a try. It took me a long time to convert (hasn't even been a year), but I did and I'm quite satisfied. I even decided to upgrade to their Premier package, I was so satisfied. One gripe on their DVR, though: no "suggestions" like Tivo. Sadly, this is part of several patents which Tivo holds and DirecTV's hands are tied there without licensing it.
I considered switching to cable (Cablevision) recently, but got ticked off at their website which would NOT tell you the prices for their packages... ONLY their "current deals". After the "deal" was over, you had no idea what the price would go up to. I say BS to that.. and emailed them about it, too!
