British carrier O2 to unlock out-of-contract iPhones {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Nov 9th 2009 10:56PM You didn't pay the full price even for the pay as you go option. O2 subsidizes the phone a little and they add the free internet option as long as you top up at least £10 per month. Oh and btw o2 has never had a truly unlimited internet usage plan. It is only called unlimited but in fact it does have a limit. A fair usage policy applies and in this case it is something like 3gb per month. Also you are not allowed to tether and if you want to do so here is an additional £9 charge ( could be 10 though ). So it's mostly smoke and mirrors on both orange and o2. Maybe vodafone will be different but will see next year. If nothing else they should have a free iphone with plans over £35 which is way better than both o2 and orange.
Anyway this payg 12 month period totally sucks. At least the blacksn0w unlock works for now but it is quirky at times.
Dell Adamo XPS coming 'in time for the holidays' for $1799 (unboxing and hands-on video!) {Engadget}
Nov 5th 2009 7:30PM Hum this is a flow any way you look at it. It is actually a terrible business decision and is a monstrosity the likes of which you see only in early prototypes. I don't care if the computer starts up in 30 secs. At that price point it is definitely oriented towards business people only no self respecting business person would be caught dead with this thing. It is but ugly and quite possibly very dysfunctional and it you type on it for extended periods of time I would imagine that your wrist will start to hurt because of the steep angle. Seriously Dell did you hire monkeys to review your designs?
Apple killing Atom support, dreams of netbook hackintoshers in next Snow Leopard release? {Engadget}
Nov 2nd 2009 8:32AM I am not defending Apple at all but why should they start selling a standalone OS? It's up Apple's execs to decide what they should make and what they should TRY to sell. The fact that you and a few others wish Apple would start supporting more platforms is nice but really doesn't mean squat.
Did you guys really expect Apple to stand still and NOT protect their assets when they are being constantly attacked by companies like Palm and Psystar? Plus Apple is about to release a table with is more or less a netbook. I most likely does not have an Atom CPU but is something similar so it makes a lot of sense to lock Atom out. Don't get me wrong the news of Atom being locked out of SL is both great news and quite bad ones. For one the tablet is very likely to be running a full blown version of the OS but on the other hand Apple is most definitely going to position it in a price range above that of netbooks if they are making sure that netbooks are nor supported.
I really wish Apple would focus a little bit more attention on budget computers but then again my wish really doesn't change the company policy ...
Orange to start UK iPhone sales on November 10 {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Oct 24th 2009 6:43PM well look at it this way, if orange falls short then there is always hope for vodafone. And in all fairness you couldn't really get any worst than O2.
iGOG VelAUcity brings velocity-sensitive drums to your humble iPhone {Engadget}
Oct 23rd 2009 7:45PM that is definitely one of the coolest applications I have ever seen ( not just for the iphone ). Nice used of the available hardware.
Yamaha's PDX-60 wireless iPod / iPhone dock adds yAired to the lexicon {Engadget}
Oct 21st 2009 6:17PM I fail to see what it the difference between this and the 50 model which btw currently retails for about 150 quid ( apart from the slightly higher retail price ). The system is nice but the wireless attachment is a bit large for my taste. Also both PDX-30 and PDX-50 have 2x15w speakers so it's quite reasonable to expect this to be the same. And that color must be a mistake!
Apple's Magic Mouse: one button, multitouch gestures, Bluetooth, four-month battery life {Engadget}
Oct 21st 2009 6:09PM most of you are overlooking one major issue - the way you hold the new mouse. The correct way to position your hand on a 2 button mouse with a scroll wheel is to hold it between your thumb and pinky. However most of the older user find this quite awkward and tend to move their middle finger between the 2ndary button and the wheel. Well here you don't have to do that since the wheel is everywhere on top of the mouse. Hence all those users will really like the new mouse. It's really easy to bitch about how shitty apple design is because it's different and sometimes goes against the grain but this time Apple has actually done a good job. Also there is a tactile feedback when you press on the mouse ( i think ). You know how the new glass touchpad had no buttons yet you can click it and it does feel just like a click? When this is based on the same technology if you can believe what apple says.
Yes if you are a gamer this is not a good mouse but do you really think hardcore gamers use a Mac? Last I checked a lot of games still don't run on OS X.
Recent iPhone 3GS shipments block jailbreaking, jailbreakers still in business {Engadget}
Oct 14th 2009 4:47PM but if apple allows people to install any application they want then how is apple going to control the apps that get installed for *quality* and more important how is Apple going to make developers fork over 30% of their income? After all you can just host your app on your own site right?
BTW jailbreak is still a go. Only it's maybe back to tethering for jailbreak. And in fact purplera1n works just fine on a brand new iPhone 3gs. The dev-team really needs to shut up and start actually doing something rather than telling Apple how to fix their software so the *new* tools no longer work.
Dell Latitude Z series to include wireless charging? {Engadget}
Sep 18th 2009 11:29AM except that Apple would not build a wireless charger at this point. They are slow wasteful and quite expensive to manufacture. Oh and worst of all they are huge compared to a the current wired ones. You also need extra hardware hence the hideous looks of the new Dell machine.
Anyway you should note that the article say "perhaps even wireless charging". To paraphrase this Dell has never said that they will use an induction charger.
