On the other hand, I already have Tivo with cablecard (RCN), and it works great. What would I gain if RCN offered Tivo? I'd probably get screwed on teh cable card, pay more for Tivo because I'd be paying for the box as part of the monthly subscription, and who knows how it would be crippled.

AT&T's problem is unlimited data, which could be really unlimited if someone made it that way.
Maybe ATT can take a lesson and offer free tethering up to 2GB a month (say) or plans for more data that cost something.
