Microsoft confirms USB HD DVD for Xbox 360 {Engadget}

May 8th 2006 2:48PM I expect the Blu Ray drive in PS3 will be as crippled as the 360 HD-DVD drive. No TrueHD audio, no 1080p, limited interactivity features. But as long as the add-on is $199, I'm there. Any less is gravy.

NVIDIA brings you "Extreme HD" gaming {Engadget HD}

Apr 18th 2006 3:19PM 1. 1920x1200 is better than 1080p resolution.

2. 1920x1200 is the only resolution I use on my laptop. It really comes in quite handy when using Ableton Live 5.

3. That said, a 1200p product "HD Extreme" probably isn't helpful in demystifying HD. Let's stick with 720 and 1080 as HD resolutions, mmmkay?

PlayStation VP sez PS3 will cost between 499 and 599 euro {Engadget}

Apr 5th 2006 2:02PM This is getting tired. Howard Stringer, Sony's president, has stated that PS3 will not debut in the US for more than $399. He made the comment last October when he announced PS3 would be delayed 6 months (from May to November) to hit that price. Don't worry about what PS3 will cost in other markets (but don't expect PS3 to be a fully featured Blu-Ray player, either).

Movie theaters to screen live sporting events in 3D {Engadget HD}

Mar 25th 2006 6:10PM Chicken Little 3D was AWESOME - so much so that I saw it twice and easily could have seen it another half dozen times. The effect is created by sending 67 fps to each eye (144 fps total) and is the most comfortable, convincing 3D I've ever seen. It didn't require me to constantly shift my focus like the recent 3D Imax features. I will see just about anything released in D3D - even sporting events.

Xbox exec denies existence of 1080p gaming for the PS3 {Engadget}

Mar 23rd 2006 9:55AM The only *officially* announced PS3 game, Untold Legends, will be 1080p 7.1 surround. That 3rd party developers are finding the learning curve steep doesn't mean 1080p is not feasible. Learning the Cell is difficult enough!

Toshiba HD-DVD players still appear as 1080i, even with firmware upgrade {Engadget HD}

Feb 20th 2006 9:16AM I hadn't seen that article. I was going off the information provided in Bitburner's High Definition DVD FAQ, although they have now updated the FAQ to reflect the information in that interview.

Although I haven't seen the promise of progressive HD-DVDs anywhere other than that one interview...

Toshiba HD-DVD players still appear as 1080i, even with firmware upgrade {Engadget HD}

Feb 18th 2006 3:31PM I thought this was long settled and common knowledge, especially for an HD site. HD-DVD produces a max 1080i output. Blu-Ray is 1080p. That's why HD-DVD and Xbox 360 are considered "transitional technologies" why PS3 and Blu-Ray are true hi-def.

I'm not interested in HD-DVD at all. If I'm going to buy a hi-def format, I'm buying the 1080p one.

MacBook Pros get processor bump, tops at 2.16GHz {Engadget}

Feb 14th 2006 3:06PM Yep...just checked my online order and it shows the old model replaced with the new one. :)

However, the ship date has also slipped from tomorrow until the 24th. :(

Sony Playstation 3: Say goodbye to your Tivo, your iPod, your..........Xbox 360? {Engadget HD}

Feb 3rd 2006 2:15PM A few points:

1. PS3 can push a single 1080p or dual 1080i signals.

2. PSP is already LocationFree TV compatible as of firmware version 2.6. You'll just be able to use PS3 instead of a PC to stream programs to it. You can buy a LocationFree TV base station on Sony's website now.

3. The iTunes-style music store is Sony Connect. Remains to be seen how quickly the service ramps up as right now its selection is fairly limited.

My point is that most of the "new" PS3 functionality has in fact already been implemented. I don't expect Sony to announce much in the way on new features until E3.

CES: Blu-Ray players {Engadget HD}

Jan 4th 2006 5:46PM According to Sony's new president, PS3 must debut at $399 and if they must delay six months to bring it in at that price, then they will delay six months. I expect the real reason behind the delay was to give their partners an early adopter window when they could charge $1000 and up for one. Although I'm not sure how well that strategy will work with Toshiba's $499 HD-DVD player dropping in March.
