Engadget HD Podcast 069 - 01.23.2008 {Engadget HD}
Jan 24th 2008 12:08PM I almost forget to mention the ITC thing.
As your resident "chicken-little" I was just pointing out that the entire design purpose of the ICT was to plug the "analog hole". If this new device opens up that hole at a cheap price, I wouldn't put it past the SOB studios to be a bunch of jerks and try to plug that hole with the ICT.
Studios have not been known for their generosity as of late.
This is more of a comment what behaviors to expect from them that it is on the viability of using the new /Hap-hawg/ doohickie to rip blu-ray discs.

Engadget HD Podcast 069 - 01.23.2008 {Engadget HD}
Jan 23rd 2008 1:55PM Thanks for another great podcast guys. I make sure I catch every one of these episodes.
For the record...
On the week Paramount announced they were HD-DVD exclusive I predicted the format's demise in the comments on the Engadget HD Podcast 046 on 08.22.2007:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/08/22/engadget-hd-podcast-046-08-22-2007/#comments
They defined their success scenario as "increased studio support = format progress". Which means they placed their fate in the idea that they would be able to keep all of the cats in the moving wheel barrel and Warner Bros jumped out first.
For the record... you guys poo-pooed this conclusion in episode 49. =] =P =]

Keep up the good work! We will keep listening! =]
Hauppauge intros USB PVR with component input {Engadget HD}
Jan 11th 2008 5:40PM So when the first guy plugs this into Blu-Ray player, the studios will activate the ICT.
Why the PS3 isn't the best Blu-ray player {Engadget HD}
Jan 2nd 2008 10:57AM You mean the PS3 isn't absolutely perfect at everything anyone ever thought of?
No way! I refuse to beleive it! Not true!
Ben, are you a hater or something?
Comcast beefs up HD lineup in DC Metro area {Engadget HD}
Dec 26th 2007 11:05PM In Woodbridge, VA, we got the whole list.
I'm glad I called them a month ago and complained about the weak Comcast line-up and how I wanted SCI-FI (BSG) and History in HD or I was going to switch to DirecTV (which a grove of trees is blocking right now anyway).
Could someone have actually listened to me? Might Comcast *no*t suck?
Doubtful at best.
Ask Engadget HD: Which Blu-ray player should I pick up for the holidays? {Engadget HD}
Dec 20th 2007 1:27PM I really like the IR blaster system built into my Mitsubishi. The lack of IR on the PS3 is a real stinking point for me. However, I didn't know you could by an IR device for it until I read these comments.
Ask Engadget HD: Which Blu-ray player should I pick up for the holidays? {Engadget HD}
Dec 20th 2007 1:17PM So what if you know for a fact that you will never use the game function on a PS3.
Would you still recommend the PS3 (for the 1.1 functionality) or would you look at the Panasonic or a sub-$300 player? Or wait until there are more 1.1 players out there?
"Songs in the Key of HD," a catchy little tune we can get behind {Engadget HD}
Dec 20th 2007 1:05PM Please notice that this is on the promotional HD-DVD site, so of course its going to be a little biased. There is nothing subtle about going to the HD-DVD website and seeing propaganda that is pro HD-DVD.
According to your logic, the next time I go the Obama website I fully expect him to treat Clinton in a completely unbiased fashion. Right? Huh? Right?
MadCatz's Xbox 360 HDMI Conversion Kit up for pre-order {Engadget HD}
Dec 20th 2007 12:53PM Even if this is perfect for your set up...
MadCatz is the worst hardware manufacturer there is!
Everything they make will break during normal usage.
If MadCatz handed me a bag of cash, I would wonder how long it would take for it to spontaneously combust or turn into dust or attract lightning strikes.
Dont let anything branded MadCatz near your HDTV.

How many HD DVD players does Toshiba need to sell to just break even? {Engadget HD}
Nov 30th 2007 7:55PM @ Ben
The flaw to this discussion is that it assumes Toshiba's HD-DVD business is a stand-alone effort that is completely separate from Toshiba's other DVD player businesses, which it clearly is not. Toshiba can afford to subsidize this future-based-loss-leader product as long as it continues to sell standard DVD, portable and DVD-VHS players at a huge mark up.
Yes, HD-DVD has got to be losing money, but since you and I don't know how profitable all of their product lines are in the aggregate, then we are operating in an information void.
Portfolio management is the art aggregating short-term cash flows with long-term risks.
