STMicroelectronics and Arkados join up on HomePlug AV SoC {Engadget HD}
Nov 2nd 2008 2:10PM I tried 200Mbps powerline products two years ago and they didn't live up to the hype. It even states in the user manual of the powerline products that the maximum throughput is 76Mbps using FTP. In my house, two outlets in the same room got me 30Mbps, two outlets in adjacent rooms was 10Mbps, and on a different floor 20 feet away it was 1Mbps. Then when a fan in the house was turned on all transmissions collapsed. Overall a horrible system with weak promises. In 99.9% of instances wireless is better. I have 802.11g in my house and I get 20Mbps throughput from one side to the other.
Powerline: Too expensive and too hyped

Dell rolls out Vostro 220, 220s, 420 desktops {Engadget}
Oct 16th 2008 9:05PM Good thing I just picked up a Vostro 410 this week before the 420s came out. I got a 410 with a Intel Q6600, 2GB RAM, ATI 2400 HD, Windows Vista Business with XP Pro downgrade, etc. for $587 with shipping and taxes. Looks like I bought at the perfect time because that deal isn't available anymore, even on the 410s they are still selling.
I set it up yesterday as my media center and it works great!
AT&T's U-verse Total Home DVR shows up unannounced in Milwaukee, WI {Engadget HD}
Oct 13th 2008 3:44PM Just got it two days ago here in Indianapolis. I reset my DVR to see if the software update was available yet and when the DVR booted, it asked if I wanted to download and install the available update.

Oct 10th 2008 12:07AM WHAT!?!? I live in Fishers and I have been waiting for this feature for 6 months, but I don't think we have it yet. How do you know you have it? Do you just press the Recorded TV button on the remote of the non-DVR boxes?
2010 Mazda3 unveiled ahead of LA Auto Show {Autoblog}
Oct 8th 2008 11:27PM I purchased a 5-speed manual Mazda3 sport sedan on December 23, 2003 and the car still looks better than the brand new cars in its class today. I have been very happy with my 2004 Mazda3 that just happened to roll over 98,000 miles today. It should be just under 120,000 miles when the 2010 is available and I will be looking for a 2.5L 6-speed manual sedan. Hopefully the turning radius and the suspension stay tight in the 2010, and a nice touch screen Nav and a lighter leather trim would be nice.

Sep 28th 2008 11:03PM Reboot your DVR by holding the power button for 5 seconds (or until the screen blanks out). The AT&T reps state that this will have the DVR check for updates during the reboot. With the Total Home DVR, you may need to reset all of your boxes so they get the update too.

US phone consumers: buying less, paying more {Engadget Mobile}
Aug 23rd 2008 12:10AM Yeah, but once you have a cheap phone that works, why spend money on a new cheap phone when that money could go toward a nice new expensive phone. The cheap phone that you take camping and boating, can get beaten to a pulp as long as it still makes a call.
I do agree about the two phones though. I have a work phone that runs Windows Mobile, has a QWERTY keyboard, EVdo, and lets me communicate in more ways than my laptop. But, over the weekend, I bring out my personal Nokia E50 that can last all weekend on one charge, is small and light weight, and can take a pretty good beating. My Nokia usually has a better signal too, but I guess that I really can't compare it since my phones use two different providers.
I think enough people have had cheap pieces of crap phones, and they realize that when you have a phone for two years, you want it to have a little something more. I have never received a free phone, I always pay extra for a phone, even with with a contract, and I have never been let down by any of cell phones I have owned. As the saying goes, "You get what you pay for."
