Just how bad is AT&T? {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Feb 13th 2009 9:45AM I am the dir. of IT at my company, and I've rolled out several 3G iPhones to execs throughout the office. While the network service itself has never been an issue, the CUSTOMER service of AT&T has, on more than one occasion, caused me to consider switching carriers. I can't tell you how many mistakes they've made on our account, and how many hours I've spent on the phone trying to resolve them.

Just for instance, they let me add an International Data feature to one of the lines while that user was traveling to Costa Rica. They assured me he would be covered. Well, 1 month later when the $500+ bill rolled in, I called back to find out that AT&T doesn't actually have a roaming agreement with Costa Rica, so the International Data feature I added to the line did NOTHING. After an hour on the line with customer service, they credited the charges back. Just ridiculous though.

Engadget HD CES schwag giveaway: Blu-ray discs and more {Engadget HD}

I thought the Yahoo widgets announcement was pretty cool. I don't think my current Samsung LCD has an ethernet port, else I'd be aching for a firmware update that enabled widget support. But I don't see that happening. Maybe a separate, HDMI mini-internet-enabled set-top box could be developed as an add-on for existing panels that would add internet and widget functionality? Doubt it.

Ask Engadget HD: Which Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player loads discs the quickest? {Engadget HD}

Jan 8th 2009 7:02AM I've got a Samsung BD-P1500. It's 1.1 out of the box, but firmware-upgradeable to 2.0. Load time is decent...I'm watching the movie in less than 20 seconds after putting in the disc. That's an estimate...I'll try timing later.

I think a better poll to take is "who cares about load time on their Blu-Ray player". Suppose your player loads a disc in 4 seconds compared to my 20. Who cares?? Is that really what bragging rights have come down to? Unless I'm relying on an instructional Blu-Ray disc to show me how to perform the Heimlich on my wife who is choking on her popcorn, I really don't see the need for "fastest loading Blu-Ray player".

Poll: Have you switched carriers due to lack of HD? {Engadget HD}

Oct 25th 2008 12:41PM I ditched WOW cable in favor of Dish Network's HD-only package. Was paying WOW over $80/mo for 200+ standard definition channels that I didn't watch, and 20 or so HD channels. Switched to Dish, and I now get 80-some HD channels for about $40/mo (with DVR). Couldn't be happier.

DISH Network details HD only TurboHD packages {Engadget HD}

Jul 11th 2008 6:13AM I'm slightly confused. I already have their HD-only package right now (the dishHD package). Does this "TurboHD" package replace what I have? Am I getting tossed to the bottom tier of this new TurboHD plan, and will have to spend more money to get back to the top where I receive all HD channels like I do now?

Poll: Do you still watch SD programming? {Engadget HD}

May 17th 2008 1:19PM I get Dish's HD-only package, so apart from locals, I don't even GET any SD channels anymore. I stopped watching them, so I decided to stop paying for them as well!

Hockey will be saved by HDTV? {Engadget HD}

May 15th 2008 1:23PM I don't know the reason, but hockey is far and away the best sport to watch in HD. Maybe it's the brightness of the ice on an HD screen or something, but it just looks incredible. I was at a hockey game recently (in person), and I leaned over to my friend and said "Is it just me, or is hockey better in HD than it is in person?" :) He agreed.

DISH Network finishes off VOOM, removes last 5 channels {Engadget HD}

May 14th 2008 2:36PM Extremely upset about this... The Voom channels provided some excellent HD content that you just couldn't get anywhere else. EquatorHD was one of my FAVORITE channels, not just of the Voom channels, but all of them. Now I wish I had DVR'd the "Eye Over Italy/Greece/France/etc" shows so I could watch them over and over again.

I'm still sticking with Dish, as I have the DishHD package at $29/month, and there just isn't anything else comparable available through any other provider. And I have to think that they wouldn't have nixed the Voom channels unless they have other channels lined up to replace them with, and soon.

DISH Network rolls out 22 new HD channels {Engadget HD}

May 12th 2008 6:23PM I have the HD-only package, and I just received ALL of the aforementioned channels. I received CNN and SciFi a couple weeks ago as well. I'm LOVING the HD-only package at $30/mo. I'll be in HD heaven as soon as Dish adds HD locals in Columbus, OH.

DISH Network rolls out 22 new HD channels {Engadget HD}

May 12th 2008 9:47AM I don't have them yet either. I've reset my DVR in an attempt to force an update, but still nothing. Will keep my eye on it though. The wife loves Bravo and has missed it since we switched from cable.
