Half of government-issued digital TV coupons have expired before use {Engadget HD}
Jun 13th 2008 5:07PM Sure, but that would be a target audience mismatch. The coupon program is supposed to allow people who can't afford pay-TV to continue to receive free TV at very little cost. Often, the people who aren't paying for TV are also the same people who don't have (or understand) Internet access. It's not to say they couldn't have offered some sort of combination solution with a little of solution a and a little of solution b.... but yeah... that may be asking too much of the govt.
Half of government-issued digital TV coupons have expired before use {Engadget HD}
Jun 13th 2008 1:10PM You're forgetting one thing, Nick. The program was designed so that any expired coupons would go back into the system for new disbursement for NEW coupons. The money is allocated to the program, and it recycles until it's used up or people stop requesting coupons. The problem is that to send out new coupons, the government has to use more money on postage, wheras extending expiration dates (or not expiring until, say, February from the start) would actually be the cheapest solution. By ordering more coupons than you need or use, you are actually creating more expenditures.
DISH Network's CEO admits to "missing the HD window" last year {Engadget HD}
May 14th 2008 8:12PM There's been a lot of Charlie bashing all over the Internets.... I have an actual question though.... let's say that they actually can pull together "100" national HD channels by the end of the year. I can't keep track of how they count things, but what are we at now, according to them... 60 or 70? I'm not aware of 30 more announced HD channels IN EXISTENCE, let alone in programming deals with Dish... Does anyone know what HD networks actually exist that haven't been added yet? Obviously, there's a few over at DirecTV, and let's ignore Voom for a minute. What else CAN they add?
DISH Network suffers 90% drop in subscriber growth during Q1 {Engadget HD}
May 13th 2008 2:55AM This morning, I had my faith restored in Dish. Then, after everything - the bragging, the updated (wrong) HD count of 95.... just hours later, they KILL VOOM. 10 Channels!!!! I'm pissed, and I haven't even subscribed yet. Where is the corporate integrity? I definitely don't see how this tactic could possibly bolster subscriber growth!
