The great Google Wave invite giveaway! {Download Squad}
Nov 1st 2009 8:25AM Still not sure what "Wave" is for, but I do need to be one step ahead. Unifying communications and social media? I don't really feel the need, but perhaps once I try it, I'll be hooked.

Microsoft responds to Windows 7 student upgrade SNAFU with direct ISO download {Download Squad}
Oct 28th 2009 10:32AM I got ripped off by Digital River & Symantec 8 years ago, trying to purchase an upgrade to Symantec's complete suite. They charged my debit card, but the download would always fail at 75% (after hours of waiting). Neither DR nor Symantec would respond to months of emails. I'll never do busines with either entity again. It's good to see MS step up to the plate when there's an issue, but why oh why use an EPIC FAIL like Digital River??
Dell Streak is a 5-inch Android 2.0 MID, packs 3G and WiFi (video) {Engadget}
Oct 21st 2009 10:16AM @ DELL - Release it in the US w/ AT&T 3G and I will buy it. Yes - I will carry this large slab of tech as my primary phone/MID/PIM/Media Player. Please make sure it has a decent GPS chip and it will become my EVERYTHING DEVICE. The boot time isn't any worse than most smartphones booting cold, yet the interface appears snappy. Oh... and if it can connect to a projector for PowerPoint presentations, it would be perfect. I can stop lugging a laptop around on sales trips.
PLEASE - make sure it has a standard triax 3.5mm mini jack for mic & stereo audio. And I hope that large port or slot on the side is for full-size SDHC card, not another proprietary connector. Unless that connector would only be used for a docking station.

And for anyone complaining about Engadget being "too political", it's a blog, not a news outlet. While I may not (and in this case, do not) agree with the writers' political views, I'm reading for the tech info. Unless you're on the fence, or incredibly weak-willed, you're not going to change your political views based on comments from a 20-something geek on a tech blog. And if you are that type, you can't afford internet access anyway, having already sent your life savings to a Nigerian "lawyer" who needs you to pay government fees so his client can get millions of dollars in inheritance and share it with you.
Achtung, T-Mobile: if Project Dark is $50 unlimited, you're in trouble {Engadget}
Oct 12th 2009 12:35PM Interesting article. While the point about lack of profit in this model is valid, it brings to mind one strategy that doesn't consider profit - selling the company. Revenue (specifically EBID & EBIDT) is king when valuation for sale is the topic. Perhaps TMO is positioning themselves for a buyout in 2-4 years.
AT&T's HTC Tilt 2 coming October 18? (updated) {Engadget Mobile}
Oct 8th 2009 2:02PM @gomobile - I have 4 family members (including me), 3 with iPhones, on AT&T unlimited data and we haven't had any cap issues so far. Maybe if you stream videos 24 hrs. a day. OR... more likely... if you use your phone tethered to a PC and use a huge amount of bandwidth (ie - torrenting), they'll probably nail you.
@deneb - It's taken forever because AT&T has been eliminating or delaying smartphone launches for the last couple of years to drive more people to the iPhone. They make up to 400% more revenue on iPhone contracts, plus they need to move huge volumes to keep their exclusive contract. Notice how the UK & Canadian carriers lost their exclusivity recently?
Overall - the lack of a 3.5mm jack and the pricing kill this phone for me. Add in that it's running the same 528MHz proc that's powered most smartphones for the last 2 years. The new crop of chips (Snapdragon, Tegra, et al) have me waiting. It's easy to keep delaying for the next big thing, but with a paradigm shift like double the proc speed and even larger increases in proc POWER, investing in the last evolution of the current gen products just doesn't make sense for me.

HTC HD2 (aka, Leo) launching on O2 UK October 12th? {Engadget}
Sep 24th 2009 11:29AM Me likey!
Unfortunately, this probably means that US carriers will start launching versions in 6-8 months. AT&T will announce it for launch in about 12 months, but it will then disappear from their radar and never show up. That is how you handle uber-phone launches when Steve Jobs has you by the shorties, right?
