HD DVD players become DVD upscalers in format war fallout {Engadget HD}
Feb 21st 2008 9:38AM apparently i'm the only one this ever happended to, but back when i had my hd-a2 it wouldn't upscale all dvds. it's deinterlacing was on 720p was terrible, so i set it to 1080i and when i played some discs (H.P. & the sorcercer's stone comes to mind) i would get a message on the gui that said high resolution output not supported for this disc switching to lower resolution. my tv would show 480p and then i would have to deal with the bad deinterlacing and yes i had the latest firmware. so, in my experience, these "dvd upscalers" were half as good as my toshiba hl67 and not anywhere in the same league as my ps3

Call of Duty 4 not HD: only 600p, claim pixel counters [update] {Joystiq}
Nov 22nd 2007 10:09AM What pisses me off about all this is that these companies are lying to us. saying something is what its not. if they say "high def resolutions supported" then they should be rendered that way, not just upscaled. I know no one cares that it's not high def, but doesn't anyone care that they are being misled.
CE-Oh no he didn't! Part XI: Stringer's flip-flop edition {Engadget HD}
Nov 22nd 2007 10:02AM ya'know stringer is like the rest of these execs; completely clueless. After his quote hit the web, a subordinate told him what was up. If the BDA had a brain cell in their collective heads they would launched with everything in profile 2 and 50gig discs. they could have left toshiba with no advantage, actual or theoretical. we'd all be going balliistic over how great all these hi-def movies look and sound instead of mired in this ridiculous "we say, they say" sh*tstorm of stupidity called a format war.
