Apr 30th 2008 2:04PM With the $10 a month HD package at DirecTV you will be able to see the HD version of any standard def station that you have in your package (plus HDNet). If you are not seeing these stations, it is likely that you have old hardware that can only decode MPEG2. The newer stations are all MPEG4. A newer set top box/DVR should get you going.

Apr 30th 2008 12:53PM I switched to DirecTV years ago and have never regretted it. Being an HD snob (I don't watch it if it is not in HD!) I love having so many HD stations.
I do 99% of my TV watching in one room, so the installation was not really an issue for me. I have 4 lines from my dish and one from my antenna. Your siding will get over a few extra lines run in :)
I can't speak for dish, but the DirecTV service is very dependable, outside of the occasional outage due to bad weather. I have had several different cable providers over the years and on more than one occasion experienced extended cable outages (1+ day each occurance). I have never experienced anything of the sort with DirecTV.
I still have cable for my internet service, but I feel that I get more bang for my buck having so many HD stations (and in my area all around cheaper pricing compared to my local cable company) that it makes up for the lost discount on the cable internet.

Apr 9th 2008 1:18PM Seems like you guys missed the point that some people are frustrated about with DirecTV putting the 24 hour cap on the pay per view recordings. If I record a special event in HD, like a UFC fight, I am paying $50 for that recording. Once this 24 hour cap goes into effect, I will have to go out and buy the DVD of the event if I want to watch it again. UFC fights are not even available on Bluray at this time.
The $50 premium on the price is because you are watching the event live. I shouldn't have to pay again to own this event. IMHO this a totally different scenario when you are talking about getting to permanently keep a movie for far less than it would cost on Bluray.

Mar 27th 2008 2:50PM Doesn't make sense to buy such an expensive piece of equipment at the closest store to your house. I couldn't agree more. Go compare sets in the store, but buy online! No tax and most places have free shipping for purchases that expensive! :)

Mar 26th 2008 9:06AM Bandwidth to straight up download this amount of data is not there, but peer to peer downloads would sure make that easier. Still, done on a larger scale than the current P2P usage, you are right, download speeds would be horrific. This just puts a spotlight on how far behind our broadband internet offerings are here in the states compared to some of the state of the art implementations being used in Asia.

Mar 26th 2008 9:02AM I wonder if anyone actually bothered to read the article before posting their comments? He doesn't say that people are going to buy 128gb flash cards with movies on them, he specifically mentions the possibility of going into a store with your own memory card and downloading the movie, presumably from a kiosk. I think there would be alot of logistical issues to work out with something like this, but with the way that the music industry has gone, it is obvious that people don't want to hang on to the physical media so this makes sense.
